I like Undertale but its just not up there.

Can someone explain the appeal of this universe? I mean, I played the game and enjoyed it but what is it that makes you want to create fan art, fan fiction, and constant discussions on places like this general?

I know a lot of people have come down from the hype about Undertale being "the best game ever", but personally not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about Undertale, and it's been almost two solid years now. I can't say the same for any other game I've played, and I think that says something about Undertale and just how impactful it was to me personally. It is my favorite game, and it will hold a special place in my heart until the day I die.

Can you elaborate on why it means so much to you?

I like the characters and they lend themselves easily to various scenarios. The game is also almost too obscure in some places, which leads to people theorizing. The two together build most of the fanworks.

I used to have regular contact with Terry Davis, talked with him about his operating system and life philosophy, even made a small technical contribution. The memeposting really depresses me because it ignores the things I like about him and probably reinforces the worst parts of his schizophrenia.

The memes serve as a cautionary tale. They're also funny as all hell.

I just had a mental image of them cooking together, and she turns souls green, so it works I guess. And of course, Kindness is like a core part in being a hero. But overall, I see Undyne's personality as being almost entirely fueled by determination. Without DT, she'd be an entirely different person.

But Determination is present in all 7 human soul types, so it still works either way.

I think the simple reason is s dumb goat kid made me cry, which was a first for me with vidya. Aside from that, I've always been big with music in games, and Undertale's tunes were stuck in my head for over a year. Listening to certain songs brings me back to when I first played it, and how I felt. I don't think a video game will ever make me feel that way again. I think things like Undertale, when they click with you, are once in a lifetime experiences. I got bored of OFF quickly, I completed LISA The Painful with mild interest at best, but Undertale was the one that struck me.

I love the characters, but not the game.

She tries to kill you dead but that aside she's probably one of the more actively nicest people in the Underground between giving Papyrus cooking lessons, giving Shyren piano lessons, trying to be friends with Napstablook and managing to talk Alphys off the edge of a waterfall

I'm just getting into OFF now, weirdly enough. I'm disturbed by how much my views towards Undertale align with the Batter's. The soundtrack is bitchin'.

Thing is, it's meming about someone who literally thinks the radio and internet have secret messages about him, and who has several delusions, of which the "cia nigger" ones are the most harmful. It's not just cautionary, it's making the problem it warns against worse.
I loved talking to the guy. He made a whole operating system for modern hardware because of nostalgia for programming Commodore 64 games, he invented his own interesting quasi-Christian theology based on the old testament and conversations with a random number generator, he drew funny comics about Moses. Conversations with him were full of wonderful things, and they were at their worst when they devolved into sad paranoid rants. And now the rants are overtaking the earnest passion.
I get why it happens, but it's really sad. There's more to him than this.

After these two, we ha 6 Monsters, and 6 Humans. If each Human and Monster had the opportunity to form a close bond, who would befriend who?

Flowey can turn into Asriel with the power of seven human souls, and crucially, seems to be able to go on for a while even without the continuous input from those souls. The whole thing is vague enough to bolt on all kinds of mechanisms to make it work. I don't think it's that impossible.

No, the only way he's getting goat with 1 soul is if it's his own, or possibly his mother or father's, but even that's not sure. Otherwise he needs 7. And not just 7, but 6 and enough monsters' compassion to remind him of himself once again.

You might as well just take him out back and put both barrels against his fluffy little skull because there ain't no saving that goat.

Light Blue - Patience: Waiting for an opportunity, and striking with a sharp attack - Toy Knife made of plastic, Faded Ribbon that makes you look cuter so monsters don't hurt you. Same color as Light Blue Attacks that require no movement.
Orange - Bravery: Rushing fist-first through all obstacles - Tough Gloves made of pink leather, Manly Bandanna with abs drawn on it. Same color as Orange Attacks that require constant movement.
Blue - Integrity: Hopping and twirling with your original style - Ballet Shoes that make you feel incredibly dangerous, Old Tutu that is a protective armor covered in dust. Blue SOUL mode is Gravity Manipulation.
Purple - Perseverance: Taking notes when you felt trapped - Cloudy Glasses and Torn Notebook filled with illegible handwriting, both increase INV. Same color as KR, which deals poison damage over time. Purple SOUL Mode is trapped in webs and lines and stuff.
Green - Kindness: Care and Concern lead you to a delicious victory - Burnt Pan that increases the effect of healing items, Stained Apron that heals every other turn. Same color as healing items. Green SOUL Mode can't escape, and uses a shield to block attacks from all around.
Yellow - Justice: Sure-fire accuracy puts an end to the mayhem - Empty Gun that requires precision to be used effectively, and a battle-worn Cowboy Hat that makes you want to grow a beard. Yellow SOUL Mode is oriented like Monster SOULs and shoots.

It's not much, but from this we can gleam some semblance of personality from these kids.

The human souls don't consist of love, hope and compassion like monster souls do. He needed to specifically suck up some monster souls and then have Frisk awaken those emotions in him for him to start feeling for a bit.

He has emotions, just no empathy (but that doesn't affect your basic point).
I have one hypothesis. Consider the following:
- Soulless flower: no empathy
- Six-souled flower abomination: no empathy
- Seven HSE boss monster form: empathy
- Soulless boss monster form, before turning back into Flowey: empathy
It seems like he has no empathy as a flower, regardless of souls, and he does have empathy in his boss monster form, regardless of souls. But he needs souls to turn into a boss monster shape in the first place.
You could also explain this by Flowey not having a reason to show empathy in his Omega form while still being capable of it, and soulless Asriel being capable of empathy because of whatever residual power fuels his boss monster shape.

This always seemed very questionable to me. "Humans can be fundamentally heartless" kind of conflicts with a core sentiment of the game, about love and understanding for your fellow sentient creatures, and it's one part of the general anti-human sentiment that's portrayed as wrong and bad in other places in the game.

Never liked the premise of it. Sentimentality or not, Frisk running through the entire game, only to then give up their entire existence rubs me the wrong way.

I don't like the premise either, but Frisk does live on as a separate person who shares a body with Asriel. It's not quite that bad.

To be fair, this is said by a species that's been decimated and cast into a mountain behind an impenetrable barrier, so believing humans can sometimes have no compassion is rather mild in terms of opinions.

There's a reason for that sentiment since, you know, they were massacred and forced underground. I don't think they'd look on humanity's past actions towards them and say there's love, compassion and hope in their souls.

And there is something that rings true gameplay-wise too. You. Your actions guide the human, and those actions aren't intrinsically rooted in any of those three things. You can play the way you want.
