It's set in one of Drakengard's endings but it doesn't "continue the story" at all, as Caim and Angelus were slaughtered instantly by air to air missiles. However, it is definitely a spiritual successor that continues the themes of bleakness and futility and making everything worse by being utterly reckless with your sword.

It allows all attacks to break the damage cap, as well as giving the character 100% critical hit rate for 15 seconds.
Combined with elemental adjustments like, say, En-holy and Imperil-Holy, you've got skills like Saint Cross doing 50Kx2 instead of 9999x2.
