It condenses extra information. There's more things to do on the inside of a house, so you need more space. But when you're walking past the outside, you don't really interact with anything except the door. IRL we compress this wasted time walking by thinking about something else, but in a game players are very aware of wasted time.
This is the same reason why overworld maps are not 1:1 accurate.

That's what I've got so far, but sometimes when the player collides the normal has a Y value to it, even on a completely straight wall. I don't know how to get around this. Seems like the way that collisions work in Unity.
