I never tried it, but I assume its extracting your save data and then reloading it to ressurect some boss, like HBLB at ksg-whatever glyph. Then, after you get a decent gem, you run the chalice again and repeat the process.

finally got my bloodletter so I'm working on gemming it up. bloodborne-wiki says that tempering gems don't affect blood damage but that's not correct is it? i was planning to farm hamlet lantern gems to get me through the chalice grind.

They definitely affect blood damage. Hamlet droplets will do you well.
