Dunno what you've been watching, but robot heroes are often some of the most popular ones because they have a buttload of room for character growth as the robot learns what it means to be human. For the sci-fi/cyberpunk crowd, robot humans challenge our perception of what it means to be sentient and intelligent. And being a robot means they can have as many cool flashy abilities as you want to give them without being limited by being human.

The reason why stuff had to be replaced is because Archie lost the contracts to certain staffers. This obviously didn't apply to Ian, meaning either they had him resign his contract or the fire happened before he first signed. If it's the latter, then we'd have to go back to when exactly the fire happened. Del Rio's first issue was #151 which was less than a year before Ian started, so it's entirely possible her contract was signed after the fire and thus they'd have the original lying around.
That and Nicole was redesigned anyway.

No polishing in the world would ever fix an unnecessaryreboot of Sonic and the shit story associated with it. It would be a similar case to Forces - decent but going in a direction a lot of fans would hate the series to go in.
