No, not a split personality. More like, what Knuckles could be if he stopped caring about doing things "the right way". Maybe he names that uncaring side of himself it or whatever. Maybe they don't even name it "enerjack". Just the idea that if Knuckles stopped being good, he would be a near unstoppable force.

Because gatling guns, cannons, tanks and the like don't look out of place in childrens' media. It's realistic assault rifles and pistols that look wrong.
Plus there was literally no point to Shadow wielding guns. The only reason it was ever a thing was to have an excuse for enemies to have health bars.

I'd like to see someone give "Sonic with guns" another fair shot. Maybe make a game where the guns have pushback on your character and part of the challenge would be aiming your weapon in the right ways to gain more momentum.

Tone-wise you just have to make them cartoony. Even Shadow wasn't entirely realistic weapons, it had weird alien and Eggman guns which only made the realistic ones stand out more.
