You are correct though. This is a good way of categorizing. And the AE IS in fact a liftback. I think what illustrates the difference very well are the old bug-eyes euro Corollas. They came with both liftback and hatchback body styles.

There may have been no 5 door hatchback Corollas but 5 door hatchbacks certainly exist. It's just that this Corolla in particular is 3 door only in hatchback body style and 5 door only in liftback style.
