the dodge nerf is an indirect nerf to his mobility. Used to be he could mount up mid combat and get pretty far with agile dismount because of all the stored dodge charges because attempts to dismount would miss but he only stores one instead of three now which makes it far less likely for him to get away with mounting before disengaging.

ofc I think swift as wind is the the popular level 1 talent now and previous nerfs to dodge had made it about on par with the deflect talent last patch iirc, so this latest change doesn't do anything beyond making perfect defense the goto level 7 talent now

tl;dr they just piled on more nerfs to a build that was already losing popularity and solidified the status of his newer build. The fact that he has deflect (and they've made his deflect build better by making dodge shitty) really doesn't detract from the aspects of his kit that make him problematic

I only started playing during that 2nd Anniversary Promotion and mainly stick to vs. AI modes since I don't want to shit up ranked/draft, so I'm talking out of my ass, but are newer characters just straight up better than older ones?

I picked the Support Set when I first started playing and Stukov feels better to play and more efficient than any other support hero I've played, with the exception of Morales.

Yes and no, the original characters kinda defined the game, new heroes expand on it with new mechanics, but sometimes blizz fucks up and release a completely bullshit character genji

there have been some ludicrously good heroes released recently but many of them have been heavily nerfed after the initial rush, many older heroes have remained competitive, and the constant changes/reworks as well as constantly shifting meta mean that what is considered exceptionally good is changing every few months

Stukov is good, but doesn't blow all the other supports out of the water, many of them are reasonably competitive
Malthael was broken on release but subsequent nerfs have brought him to reasonable levels
Dva was reasonably good but not the best bruiser by any means but has been nerfed into meh status
Genji is very good and bliz is obv still struggling balance him (difficult considering he's hypothetically very good at high level play, but also very difficult to play, which means constant bans by high level players, but shitters bring down his winrate significantly because they can't play him which mucks up blizzard's data)
Cassia's bounced around the meta from top tier to good; Probius went from v good to eh, Lucio went from most dominant to basically useless

conversely heroes like malf, uther, arthas, stitches etc are constantly moving around but are currently considered to be strong

as hammer in ranked, is it ever worth taking the life leech talent on 4 rather than focused attack? on one hand the leech is redundant if my support is on point and I do lose some damage, but the leech allows me better early laning and trading and feels really comfortable having (splash) self sustain so is it a noob trap or not?

How could Malthael be broken when he was countered by fucking Murky of all characters?

He burns about 30% more mana and dodge is much weaker. Those are significant, but he's still extremely mobile, has a PROTECTED button, and too much health for how mobile.
And don't pull the winrate card on me because you KNOW there are a ton of retarded Genji pickers out there. Not as bad as Stukov in that regard but still.

Malthael is not countered by Murky. He does %-based damage, but when your HP bar is as small as Murky's his Q actually fucking hurts.
Also the bigger deal is that he could literally rape your whole fucking team and heal through it by hitting R, holding down Q with his nose, and licking W and E while slamming the mouse on the table.

stop memeing, hammer may not be top tier, and probably shouldn't ever be picked before fifth pick, but she's a solid specialist who enables objective pushes on siege maps.

you should not be solo split pushing with Hammer, sustain is less important on her than you think unless you're playing QM. Generally speaking, you should be playing her as a better Raynor, constantly stutterstepping from backline behind your tanks, you've got a knockback to disengage divers, and the only time you should be sieging up is when you're absolutely 100% positive you won't get ganked/you're safe/you're surrounded by your team. I like taking First Aid at 7 just for those absolute oh shit moments, but the Z talent at 7 is a good alternative.

the meta then heavily favored double (sometimes triple) tank/bruiser comps, with teamfights being dragged out slugfests, and his % based damage, self sustain and armor meant under the right circumstances he could engage and win/survive 1v3. He's never been a fantastic 1v1 duelist but he was head and shoulders above all the other bruiser/durable melee characters because he could drag out fights with them despite being outnumbered.

That's because they assume that since Malth is all %-based damage a hero with a tiny health pool would fuck him. Admittedly both of Murky's ults are really good against him but outside of that Murky can't really fight him.

Malth was ridiculous on release because he was designed to be anti-tank, in the same way you might draft Tychus as anti-tank, but Malth ended up being ludicrously good because of his above average durability with armor and sustain, in addition to also being good at waveclear, having no real mana issues (thus no need to back) and the fact remains that % based damage is still good even against squishier heroes

Murky isn't really a threat, he's just a waste of resources. Nobody is really 'good' against Murky in that his entire purpose is to be a drain on enemy resources/attention. It's not that Murky is 'good' vs other heroes, it's more that he's not worth fighting. You might as well say LiLi is a threat to Malthael because she can blind, does decent dmg and doesn't give enough health back on Q and can probably outtrade him 1v1.

My, oh my, you have no idea what the point of that "counter" is. He may do more damage with his Q to Murky but he has already trouble to kill that pufferfish alone, also his Q heals him by % hp of the enemy, which will give him vs Murky almost none of the HP back. Murky can just afk push the lane and Malthael won't be able to do shit about it, even if he kills Murky he will be almost dead and Murky will be back in 5 seconds.
You all are forgetting that Murky respawn timer, you know.
