The SRAM on the cartridge is powered by the gameboy when it's on. As long as the gameboy remains on and the cartridge is inside it will retain its save data.

You stopped not too long before some very serious shit happens.
You'll be able to finish the game and get one of the bad endings pretty soon. You're about 2/3 of the way to 100% complete, if you decide to do the side quests that open up.
Could be underlevelled, but I believe Tamamo is explicitly supposed to be hard mode, with nero being the easiest and emiya in the middle, not sure if that was just what I was told before playing or if it was explicitly designed that way.
