Least reliable car?

I have heard that some 1998-2001 Mercedes ML’s were really bad in terms of reliability and quality

>least reliable car?
Chinese cars. Even when China builds a chevrolet in their own factory for the chinese market, they cut so many corners that the car loses reliability, has minimal materials, and is even damaged when hitting a bicycle as seen in the picture.

Absolutely not
And wow. That is an insane condition to live in, to have to drive a car like that. They aren’t idiots either, they know the car is that dangerous, it’s just that’s how you live.

So many lemons, I remember reading about a reviewer whose model's tie rod disconnected during a test run.

Speaking of reliability I saw two broken down camrys on the way home today. I maintain that people buy camrys because “they’re reliable” and “don’t need maintenance all the time”.
Well there you go. Now you know all cars need maintenance. Or maybe they’ll just buy a new Camry this time. Some people never learn..
Absolutely yes

It was done by Daimlerchrysler before the final divorce. Interesting. Remember Daimler owns some portion of Mitsu.

Friends' parents had a Vectra B with 380k km. Monthly driven on 800+km tours with very little issues.
Another friend and his grandfather both have Astras F and they're in really good shape.
I'd say it's quite the opposite. I've heard bad stuff about newer Vectras, Astras and Zafiras

Air cooled Volkswagens. Don’t get me wrong they are super cool cars and easy to maintain but you’re going to be working on them more than driving them

I wouldn't say high maintenance means it's unreliable.

If you can’t guarentee that your car will start or make it from point A to B because of carb gremlins, spindles stripping, belts shredding, electrical issues, oil leaks and so on I would call that unreliable. My friends and I all owned various types of air cooled VWs. We spent more time in our buddies garage than we did cruising

>I have heard that some 1998-2001 Mercedes ML’s were really bad in terms of reliability and quality
You can also look at the Consumer Reports reliability ratings results. They collect data and then have those summed up every year for each model.

>I saw two broken down camrys on the way home today.
There are so many more Camrys on the road that there should be a number of broken down Camry appearing each day. Similarly, there are more dogbites to children each year from labrador retrievers than there are from pitbulls. So that means pitbulls are much friendlier and safer around children?

That's entirely valid, if you're never sure that your car will even make the trip, any trip, then you're right, I'd say that's unreliable.

I just hate it when people don't follow manufacturer-specified maintenance, then get upset something expensive breaks and call it an unreliable POS.

The final years of the Rover P6 coincided with production problems at British Leyland. This was highlighted in August 1975 when Drive, the magazine of the British Automobile Association awarded a trophy to a Rover 3500 as the worst new car in England.[14] It reported that a Rover 3500 purchased in 1974 had covered 6,000 miles (9,600 kilometres) during its first six months, during which period it had consumed three engines, two gear boxes, two clutch housings and needed a complete new set of electrical cables. The car had spent 114 of its first 165 days in a workshop.[14]

I agree with you on that for sure. Air cooled VWs require tune ups for sure but constantly seem to have carb problems regardless of what manufacturer you used. I had my float get stuck open and it started weeping gas on to my block and it caught on fire. Luckily I didn’t burn any electrical or hoses and was able to put it out before any major damage happened

>Air cooled VWs require tune ups for sure but constantly seem to have carb problems regardless

Fans of air-cooled VW have them because they want to keep that type of car alive despite its many shortcomings compared to modern improvements. There would probably be similar fans of old tyme balloon tires except for the lack of lower-cost orphan product manufacturers and tire safety concerns.

My 6.0 PSD. Hydro locked overnight because of the shit egr cooler leaking coolant into the manifold. Other than that a great truck desu.

So much this.

>turn ignition
>taillights short
>go over speed bump
>radiator falls out
>think about driving
>wheel falls off, bumper disconnects, fluids start leaking, hoses crack, brakes go... pretty much car explodes

And people still argue it's as good, if not better than the gtr

P.s. not a gtr fanboy

I was always under the assumption that anything British was shit and as of late the new alfa gulia came falling apart off the lot for no extra charge. Also I valet and I can't say too much about them except I know for a fact that engineers don't know shit about fuel lines/pumps. They age horribly they all feel cheap and outdated so quickly and wreak of fuel.

You should work in a oil shop and watch customers have non-Dexos put in their ecotec engines. They drive around, burn a ton of oil then call the shop complaining and that their going to the dealer. The lulz from void lease warranties are just beatiful.

Least reliable new cars? Basically anything from Fiat-Chrysler. Those rebadged Daewoos have been atrocious too.

Most German cars, lower end Fords (Fiesta, Focus) and American built Nissans are mostly a shitshow too, though not on the same level as FCA.

Are you suggesting that Chinese cars are more reliable?

Why would you go that long without checking your oil anyway? You're supposed to check it every fill-up, or at least once a month at the latest. Pretending you don't have to check the fluid that keeps the engine from destroying itself just because it's from [CURRENT YEAR] is just retarded.

My 2005 Focus doesnt burn a drop of oil. Why can a cheap old shitbox get away with it?
My 1990 Benz uses only about a quart every 2500 and has 320K miles.
Why are modern cars so shit?

i didnt know coupe camries existed

>My 2005 Focus doesnt burn a drop of oil.
It's probably replacing the burned oil with dissolved combustion solids as well as some gasoline by products. So that's why the apparent oil level doesn't go down even if some oil gets used up.

But whether or not a car uses some oil between oil changes is not really reflective of reliability. Some engines were designed with the expectations that they would consumer oil at a faster rate than other engines.

>Are you suggesting that Chinese cars are more reliable?
They aren't, but the real question is whether they honor the warranty or aggressively find clever ways to disqualify your warranty first.

T. Me

Most cars I've had where pretty reliable considering how hard I beat on them but the worst was easily the newest chink made Hyundai's the engines in them just fall apart.

My mom has a mercedes e320 that she has been driving for 7 years. She does no maintenance, doesnt change the oil, nothing. And its still going strong with 300k miles on it. All the little electronics in her car broke, but everything else is fine.

DERET

Ausfag here we all still drive v bodies and they are almost unkillable.

Some of the yank engines are starting to fall apart at high ks like the GM high feature v6 ls and 3800 due to age/abuse

The actual boats themselves though are very strong good chassis and electronics for the most part especially the 1997-2006 models that u never got we literally chucked v8 from vettes and gm parts bin at them supercharged 3800s you name it.

Only weak part I can think of is the tailshaft and strange rubber mounts that are clearly designed for 200rwhp max yet nutty Aussies put 500+ through them on the regular

Dodge Spirit.

I have never seen one running. And I've seen 7 or 8 in my life. Many when they were still a few years old.

You think normies ever check their oil? Just because you and the rest of the users on an Okinawan fish hatching enthusiast forum do it doesn't mean anyone else does.

Females are the worst for this I've had two family members run their think shitboxes with 1-2l of oil in the sump and not change it for 2-5 years I wish I was joking.

A hynudai blew up with less than 155k on it and it was a decent Elantra the other was a GM with no issues

Would a shop or mechanic ever semi-sabotage a car to ensure it would come back in a few months for more servicing?

Unless they are amoral scumbags absolutely not. It's also pretty damn illegal, other shows will find out and spread the word also.

The closest thing would be the very small chance that they will leave notes to tother mechanics in places that the owner will never see, like writing "customer too cheap for wheel alignment" on the inner part of a rim before putting on the tires.

>Are you suggesting that Chinese cars are more reliable?
They might be on a money basis in south america. If you can buy three new chinese cars for the price of one american branded car, then chances are you'll be better off financially.

everything.

Mk7 Fiestas are fine really, the Mk6 had more problems. The only big problem the Mk7 has is the automatic gearbox eating itself, but who the fuck buys an automatic Fiesta anyway?

>It's also pretty damn illegal,
No it isn't. Just like copying homework or getting help on exams, it's perfectly okay as long as you don't get caught. It's the rat race and everyone got to get ahead.

Nissan 300ZX

>You think normies ever check their oil?
They don't because of the "cry wolf" situation. When they get the car, they check the oil a bunch of times and it never seemed to go down. So all that checking seemed to be wasted effort. After that, they stopped checking believing it would be like that until the next oil change.

But the purpose of frequently checking oil is to also look for a sudden drop in the oil level which would signify something is starting to go wrong.

>it's not illegal because if you don't get caught you won't be punished

Yes

It seems that way. All the muslim immigrants to the USA in my state seem to be driving japanese cars. Some of them even have new japanese cars. But almost all of them are japanese. Those muslims don't buy american or german cars.

Are they really that bad?. The air cooled appeals to me after having (now fixed) overheating issues with a liquid cooled car. Do you know if SU carbs are any good on VW's? The SU in my reliant works pretty well so idk why it would be different on an air cooled VW. I love air cooled VW's but they're very expensive for some reason

anecdotal, but my Saturn SC2 has never failed to start, hasn't had any major engine problems, returns good mileage, and has been beaten on savagely for more than a decade with minimal maintenance.

anything GMC, namely a Jimmy

because saturns are actually unironical well made

>least reliable car?
Even a Lexus would be least reliable if someone didn't take care of it. And reliability changes between different brands as the various car makes and models get older. So there isn't any one or two good answers to OP's question as it was asked.

But what maintenance can I do to prevent my starter from dying every 4-5 years? Should I buy a can of starter fluid and spray it? That sort of problem makes it unreliable to me my electric Throttle pedal died once, what maintenance prevents that?

Probably a lada thats been fucked on 40 years of shit russian roads

If your Mercedes has a defective design as others in the mercedes forums might have commented, then there's nothing to be done other than FIAM (fix it again mercedes). Just because a car is from Mercedes-Benz doesn't mean it's engineering is going ot be faultless or have no design shortcuts.

Picture:
Mercedes german engineering
First generation E-class all wheel drive
Mercedes w124 front suspension spring

Do you see the design shortcut abomination where the spring goes around the rotating shaft? It makes you wonder if there was ever any kind of pothole that could force the spring to touch the shaft.

So, if you're a fan of Mercedes-Benz german engineering, then you must be a fan of that spring too.

Nah the car in question is a mitsubishi, still FIAM though I guess

Saturns had those plastic side panels, so all the dents and rust that mars steel bodies didn't show up. For people who lived in environments with lots of low level small dents and door dings, Saturn was a great car cosmetically.

>it's not illegal if one doesn't get caught for doing it
Most people seem to do things that way whether or not they realize it. They speed knowing they won't get caught and it doesn't really register in their minds they are doing the wrong thing. They violate lots of other laws daily and they don't realize or care because they'll never be prosecuted for it. They cheat on taxes. They sail through stop signs if they don't see anyone else on the other road. And they make right turns without stopping when the traffic light is red. Or they used to until some traffic lights added red light cameras which also detect if someone turns right on red without stopping. That of course illustrated that people would run the red lights until red light cameras put a stop to that.

>it's not illegal because if you don't get caught you won't be punished
You have to admit that there are a ton of people who act precisely this way.

>Unless they are amoral scumbags
But you already know there are a ton of those. So the odds of some of them being mechanics, shop owners, and workers is pretty good. And given that they frequently are given temptation by how quota rewards and monthly performance rewards are measured, even people who weren't corrupt to begin with will fall to temptation over time. Employee reward systems create corruption such as at the southwestern Ontario chain of car service centers named "Economy Lube". The chain continued to do scams even years after they got caught scamming in an undercover news investigation.

The owner of the chain is determined to make as much money as he can and keeps on using lawyers to stiff arm people on technicalities in the cleverly written service contract. You signed the contract to be legally scammed?

Customers have commented that their oil filter was not changed even though they paid for an oil and filter change.

.

Sometimes, shops are simply like dictators and if they damage something, they make you pay to repair it. They refuse to take responsibility for damages. My local stealership simply has the service writer come back and say while they were working on something, they discovered that another problem existed (which they probably caused) but they force me to pay for it.

Some guy in Canada went to have his bumper repainted. The dealership accidentally scratched it and refuse to take responsibility.
