You should unlock the Beast Tribes as they come though. They'll have a blue marker just like story quests and they both give good 50-60 EXP relative to how little effort they take to do daily and their stories are pretty fun in their own right.

Also any Aether Current quests, same deal with the blue quest markers.

Tell me about patch 3.1, what came along with it and how was it received? What did they do to fix it afterwards if it was bad?

It was the worst patch the game ever had. It came too late and nothing good came with it. The timing also couldn't have been worse considering how pissed people were with Gordias. They fixed it by basically releasing 3.2, which was good.
