I just bought this game and I can only really play dominion, do starts really change that much because it feels like high level players are two shotting me and I am unable to do a lot of damage even if I get them in a combo

Stats don't make THAT big of a difference. The most bonus damage you can get is +15% from gear, which is an additional 2-4 damage on the majority of heavies or an additional 1-2 damage on most lights. The real issue is that they'll be getting revenge and stuff way, way faster and that's a huge pain in the ass. Feats also make a huge difference.

Im just struggling because my team are only getting maybe 1-2 takedowns a game but the enemies just rack up 20+ kills

The enemies are probably better organised and know how to maximise damage output. Focus on having a weapon with a high Defense Penetration stat so you can break through the armour most people have. The people who still play this game have minmaxed their stats and strategies to the absolute limit.

Matchmaking in this game is shit. You can't count on having decent teammates unless you group up with some good people

it seems like every time i single someone out i just get revenged and die because someone hit their win button

Stop spamming kick and punches if they're already oos/wall nearby.
Recent patch made it so that revenge gain from normal hits were reduced but, bash like unblockable got increase. So if you're fighting someone who has "High Revenge Gain" you basically can't bash him alot.
