Depends on the hero. If you're something that can reasonably farm the jungle, sure. If you're a Spectre and it's minute 5 and you don't have a Vanguard, no.

You can only get better by playing him. Start with an orb of venom and roam. Try and bully the mid-laner or offlaner - if your other support or carry have a reliable stun you can easily continuously kill the offlaner trapping him in Shards.
