I thought that was why new sportbikes have high-set pipes with a narrow or triangular profile, so the pegs/rider will touch before the pipe does.
They're necessary for V4s to maintain equal exhaust velocity, going up under the tail means the rear cylinder bank has the same exhaust length as the front cylinder bank, which exits by the swingarm. The i4s (Suzuki and Yamaha) only have one and it exits by the swingarm.

Only the V4 ones. And it makes sense there, as those bespoke prototypes will never have to carry a pillion and the shortest path for the rear bank of the many V4s is just straight up with the tail.

It's the 600. Really good bikes, actually, easy to ride. I saved my first highside on one.
And then didn't save a highside going way slower a week later. The tire looked like someone took a fruit peeler to it though, so maybe it was just cold.
