Get a bike. No, seriously. CBT, basic gear, 125cc bike. Tax is practically nothing, small bikes are cheap, insurance knows you can't do much damage to anything with a bike lighter than you are.
Cycling > public transport. More independent, and actually faster than bus routes. Plus, you work out as you travel.

The bus and the train might be bad, but it beats paying a third or even half of your wage on running a car.
