It's mainly Marvel that's guilty of it, but they're caving to social pressure from people that were never part of their consumer base and trying to target them as their primary demographic despite evidence (in the form of sales numbers) indicating that they have never and still do not buy comics.

As a result Marvel is doing horrendously with its comic book sales, but because it's been bought out by Disney and does well in other areas (film and television mainly) it doesn't fear going under, and thus isn't likely to feel threatened enough to change.
