Anyone had experience with these? Should I pull the trigger?
S2000?
Prepare for the AP1 S2K tax.
You're gonna overpay no matter what
What's that? I am in the US.
Where's the fucking price?
Overpriced for what you're getting, a few years ago you could have gotten an NSX for around the same
You can get a decent C5 Corvette, Boxster S, or Cayman for that kind of money and they'll outperform the S2000 easily
If you want feels then the Porsche's still have the S2000 beat while being all around better road cars that don't rattle like an Audi
Is that really the best offer you can find for an ap1? There are 3 or 4 in my area that are sub 10k
Have you actually checked your local area since 2012?
If you can afford to garage it and baby it... I'd buy it. I think these are going to appreciate in value over time.
I bought mine last year for 10k. 100k miles.
It had a few problems like the front bumper having struck a thing or two, and the paint could have been better but these cars are out there.
I love the car to death, but I wouldn't pay 18k for a clean one.
Yeah. I had a thread yesterday about purchasing one.
>most are selling for well over $10k
>that one basket case under $8k
Bad link sorry.
Are you buying sight unseen or going in person?
Those cars you mentioned would cost 5-10x to repair or replace parts compared to a honda.
I am not handy so I don't want to get raped by the mechanics.
I will pick up in person. Fly there drive it back.
>almost 20K
god what the fuck
I used to own a 2003 AP1.
>engine is outstanding and one of the few VTEC engines that actually does kick
>damn near bulletproof
>chassis and suspension was designed by someone who believes that if you fuck up, you should be punished with a spin
>it wants to spin
>you will spin
>you will become a better driver or you will crash into a mountain
>they probably didn't test it much on trashed murrican roads
>ride can be painful unless you compromise the car with comfy tires
>it'll still suck
>get a fucking bump oversteer kit if it doesn't already have one
>your gf will hate being a passenger
For the price you could get a good Boxster S. It'll be faster than the S2K, much better behaved on shitty US roads, less apt to bite you on the dick if you fuck up, and your gf won't hate it. You're within spitting distance of a nearly-new ND Miata, which is also a better car in many ways. However, if you have a certain mindset, the S is the better experience. The engine howling at redline in a tunnel, the knowledge that a good lap time is all because of you and not because of driver assists, and having a car that will never ever have anything else like it made again are all very cool things.
>he actually believes that a 20 year old sports car thrashed by rice kiddies is going to magnitudes more reliable than newer sports cars taken care of white collar business men and rich rednecks
Seriously, fuck off with the "Honda and Toyota are indestructible" mentality, it makes you sound like dumb seniors
But it's reasonably true. The stats don't lie.
The stats that you pulled out of your ass?
Did you at least have owner take to a local shop for inspection (on your dime) before flying out?
Most? No. The first cropping has 5 out of the 10 over 15k. The rest, and the 5 below that first cropping, are also sub 15k. I said there were 3 or 4 that were sub 10k. There were 3.
Have you tried to kill one?
I've seen more dead S2000s at track days than Boxsters having issues at SPEC Boxster races
Have you tried to oil change or service an old corvette or porsche?
Pls nigga.
I most likely will contact a local mechanic to check the car during test drive.
This one from Atlanta caught my eye.

The boxster is inferior in every way except for raw power. It's a compromise for livability which I don't think personally think is worth making.
As far as I'm concerned the only light car on earth better than the s2k is the Elise.
>your gf will hate being a passenger
They won't fucking shut up about it. Maybe you should stop being so fat, bitch.
Daily driver and occasional fun at empty highways. No track days for me.
>he actually believes that a 20 year old sports car thrashed by rice kiddies is going to magnitude
The s2k's weren't owned by ricer kiddies, they were the price of the Porsche new. I knew more people in highschool autocrossing or tracking Boxsters than I knew with s2k's and not a single s2k owner was under 40.
Heres mine at 77k miles.
Handles like a charm and the engine sounds great. it will spin out if theres even a drop of rain. Must be because of the tires though. Do oil changes every 4500 miles and likes to eat up brake pads but other than that its super easy to maintain. Almost no creature comfortas or infotaiment crap. AC Heat and a cd player is all you get.
Nice, I'm jelly
Is it quick?
It makes noodle power until you hit 5.5k rpm. Its quick to me but my previous cars have been old honda shitboxes
Nice, user. How much did you pay for yours?
16k
The only problem with S2Ks that I can think of that would do that is oil starvation under extreme load, which was fixed in 02 or 03. A similar thing can happen with stock 986 or 987 Boxsters. Thats why spec Boxsters have dry sump systems. On most cars, even sports cars, you need to do some work on the lubrication system if you're going to be seeing serious track duty. Exceptions are track models like Porsche GTx cars with Mezger engines and Viper ACRs.
It's mostly the tires but it's also because it just likes to fuck with you.
18 grand for that piece of shit? Jesus.
Did you piss on your screen?
It's the harsh ride and engine noise. Girls have softer butts. My ND is way more gf friendly in those respects. The difference in her attitude towards the cars is night and day.
Finding a non Cletus Motorsports modded S2K is hard here in SoCal
My rides harsher than stock. The noise was the only thing she actually liked about it, the scream on the way to fuel cut.
I once saw it beating a Jetta. Good car.
Got 255 RE 11s in the back which are awesome in the dry but worth shit on anything wet
Not him but it's about as easy an any other car. Takes like 20 minutes.
No you didn't. And Even the cheapest Boxster cost more than the most expensive S2000 new
How is the Boxster inferior when it handles better, is more comfortable on the road, and more practical all at the same time?
It's a true mid engine roadster with lost of parts and entire sections of the chassis that are identical to 996 911s
I also want an S2000. This is what I found...
>blacked out tail lights
riced, desu. will have been thrashed.
You are better served by searching on CARGURUS.COM
Also, don't get an AP1. Sure the engine revs up 9000!!! but you will wrap yourself around a tree or a pole because the car is not very stable when it encounters a bump when cornering.
Get the AP2. The suspension setup is safer.
similar to rice tax. basically retarded faggots will treat vehicles like shit (or treat them nicely) and even though they've definitely depreciated over the years, will still charge a premium for them because of supply and demand.
does anyone else get an erection from seeing that smooth empty dash? no ipads or tablets in sight
Really? You can find a few really old ones for $8000
Do you think the price you paid was good/fair? I'm starting to look into getting an ap2.
You can easily reduce the AP1's habit of quickly spinning once it reaches the point of driver incompetence by fitting it with the softer rear sway from the CR, and then make the front slightly stiffer. That'll make it a little more approachable at the limit like the AP2 is. But honestly if you manage to spin an AP1 on public roads it means you were going too fast for conditions, that your tires are way too worn, or that you just suck at driving. In other words, it's your fault. Plus, with either the AP1 or AP2, you're going to have to learn how to sense when the car is at its limits by using your butt and your intuition, as there isn't much feedback given before it decides that you suck.
Respect the car, take performance driving lessons, and git gud. This should be a given with any sports car.
The Boxster is not as raw and entertaining. I feel like it's pretty boring compared to the S.
>pittsburgh.craigslist.org
Looks like it's been around the block more than a few times. Steering wheel looks like it got herpes, 22.5k? Lol.
>new
You mean the Boxster isn't as shit as the S2000
The Honda is a rattlecan. If you want that kind of excitement take an old Kei car onto a freeway
I got an AP1 recently (in europoorland prices are way too high, except for englandstan, but nobody wants to be on the wrong side) and it's fucking scary at first because all of the stories you hear about oversteering.
But man, you have to learn how to drive, give this car good tires and avoid rain/snow as if it was lava. I would't recommend it as a daily car, but it's perfect for weekends and dry twisty roads. It's boring on the highway (as boring as a roadster can be) but you get used to driving position very quickly and the sound always gets a smile on your face.
If you push the limists slowly, this car will tell you that it wants to spin. Then you have to correct. But do it patiently, step by step, never on an unknown road. After many tries and after learning it's limits, you'll have one of the greatest driving experiences.
Now I'm waiting for the fucking winter to end to enjoy once again this fun car.
Like s2000’s alot
But for thay price do what i did and get an ND. Not a miata fanboi at all but the ND is very very good roadster and I think in many aspects better than the s2000.
>Lighter
>its new
>more modern cabin, engine, design
>more safer in crashes
>wayyyy better torque, s2000 needs to be revved out for power
>handles better
Handles softer. Worse stock braking. Carries less momentum into a corner.
The only thing I'd give the boxster over the s2k (purely talking handling) is the steering feel is objectively more communicative. Even stepping into a friends shitbox s13 the steering feels better even it the ratio is too low.
Yes the boxster is the more practical car, and I liked Porsches long before I even thought I'd ever drive a Honda much less own one but it's the better drivers car.
I actually stiffened mine up a little because I felt it made the initial loss of grip more obvious.
...
this doesn't make sense. I love 928s, and they were cars MEANT to be easy to work on. everything about this is easy to access.
if anything, the newer ones are like this, but so are other brands too.
It rotates better around corners than an S2000, that's just an inherent advantage mid engine cars have. Ergo it does carry more momentum in a corner because of how little braking you'd have to do comparative
The brakes are better, we're talking 4 piston Brembos versus single pistons that like to over heat. I don't know where you'd get that idea from
Can someone post that one "Project D" drawing/image (you know the one)?
It was pretty clean and completely stock so yeah. Every other S2k around me was either 100k+ miles or had a shitload of aftermarket parts
>replica Reys
>baseball bat widebody conversion
>SIKK 3000 watt stereos
>CAI for massive hp increases
What is the best year for s2k? Is 2006 ok?
>300 miles in 2 years
wew lad people have to stop treating cars like assets and drive them holy fuck
Dude the S2000's brakes are garbage out of the factory
