A video game is more enjoyable to spectate the more that everything on screen is intuitively explainable to the player

The more things seem arbitrary the less the game is fun to watch. OW, right now, is a bunch of chaotic team fights. A fair number of heroes in the comp are nearly impossible to play in a way that looks impressive, and a new viewer will have no idea why one side is winning and the other is losing.

OW skirmishes are about bodycount and cooldowns. Everybody is loosely grouped up and so there's a ton of damage coming from other players that you can't really see. The players who die look mostly like the players who live, it's just that the players who live had a teammate get an early kill or they were driving off of a pick or ult advantage.

That's awful for spectators. OW is very dependent on team coordination, and almost all of that is basically lost when you're just leaping around between player cams. OW would be way more enjoyable to watch if it just focused on an individual player's screen and listened in on team communications, but that wouldn't work because it would censor players and many teams would inevitably be communicating in foreign languages.

Counter Strike works as an E-Sports FPS because it's simple and events on screen are visually obvious and manageable for spectators. The game only really becomes decision intensive once most players are dead, and by that point it's easy enough to zoom in on a certain player and let spectators feel the tension.

It is nearly impossible to make OW a good game for spectators. At best an ultra minority of people will watch it, while 90% of people curious about it will dismiss it pretty quickly.

Yet again, Dota build up their audience for years

Why do I keep being killed by Doomfist before he even hits me? I see him low on health charging up to hit me, shoot him/CC him, it doesn't register, I die, and then the punch animation plays. Only happens with him and connection is fine.
