Why do mechanics lie about the prices of cars?

I'm an 18yo looking for an 80s/90s BMW to learn the art of the wrench on. They're rare but I've been seeing them on Craigslist in good condition for $5-8k. My mother of course doesn't trust the internet, and insists that we speak to "the experts" in person.

A few weeks ago we went to some Polish dude's classic German car shop. Nice guy but he kept going on about how finding any slightly older BMW (E36, E30 etc) in running condition was impossible with my $5k budget. I told my mom he was full of shit but she wouldn't buy it.

Just today, we visited some other shop that exclusively works on Bimmers. I mentioned "E30" and the owner's wife started talking about how a non-M just sold for $50k and if you want one in meh condition you'll have to pay $10-20k. Much more if you want a good one.

Why do these asshats do this? I don't see what they get out of turning me away from their specialty car? What if I have to use them for help someday? My theory is they just get bitter when I tell them that I want to do my own work on it, because that means I won't be paying them exorbitant labor costs.

I'm especially mad at the bitch we met today because my mom was saying shit to her like "oh he'll never work on his car because it'll fall on him when he has to get under it." I started to politely explain "well if I do it the right way with the right tools on a flat surface..." and for some reason the lady interjects "no no no no!" at the top of her lungs and then switches the subject. It's not unreasonable to want to do my own oil changes now, is it?

I dont believe you are 18 but what ever. Move out then do it ask a friemd if you can use his driveway or garage

Well for one you wouldn't be buying them on the internet. Explain to mom you meet them in person, check the car out if it's as advertised and what you want, then give them money for the title.

And two, they work on cars they don't sell them. They're not experts on the used car market. That's just dumb. You don't go to your dentist asking about colonoscopies.

>and for some reason the lady interjects "no no no no!" at the top of her lungs and then switches the subject.
that's just normal female behavior, they are never wrong, do not try correcting them just nod and agree and go on your way

Fair enough but what do I have to gain from lying about my age?
Thanks, fuck women

not getting underage b&, you fag.

So you want a cheap, old, well maintained BMW that you can "wrench on", which means oil changes I guess.

You also want all this for 5k.

You also went car shopping with your mommy.

Also, of course they are bitter and don't want to help you. You walked into their shop, wanted a running shitheap and then told them you're cheap and wont use their services. They dont have stock to sell you at your price and you told them its because you'll do all the work yourself. And I'm sure they made the inference that if something big happens you'll be unable to pay them to do the work on it.

>gtfo boyracer and go buy a toyota

Airplane mode my nigger, a ban is the least of my worries. I have an entire folder of black cocks
I didn't say well maintained, I want something running. I would refresh the interior anyways because cardinal red is the shit. You can easily get this if you look long enough. And I didn't go shopping, we went to go talk to an """"expert."""" user you need better reading comprehension
Fag

your mother is paying I assume
why are you sperging and not just happy to get a car to work on, but you are rather being picky and difficult in specific old veteran models that you will have hard time find cheap replacement parts?

You really dont see why she is not happy that you want to sunk money in to a car from 30 years ago?

I'm paying, don't assume

Then why the fuck did mommy have to talk to the mechanic?

Because either you're full of shit, or you know this is a bad idea and you'll be in the hole when the 25+ year old car shits the bed and you want Mom there to bail you out and rather not have to listen to "I told you so".

$5k is a little low for an e30 these days, generally you need $6 or $7 to get a well maintained one, same goes for an e36. Also, while the engines last for centuries the electronics definetly fucking dont, e30/6's are awesome cars no doubt but expect constant bullshit that requires specials tools and overpriced parts.

As far as the mechanics go, theyre collectors not boy racers. To them, a "good running car" is fucking prestene through and through with sub 100k original miles. For you and the rest of us, a "good running" car is a car that runs and probably wont kill you on the drive home.

As far as your parents not letting you buy one, save up your own money for the car and insurance. If they dont want you wrenching on it, wrench on it somewhere else. Or wait till your actually 18 amd move the fuck out and do what you want.

Ok people I am from eastern europe
we pay usually only mandatory insurance, which you call Liability Coverage and it cost us around 100-150€ annually

I had discussion with 22 years old from canada and he said the cheapest insurance for him was like $1500-2000 annually

like is that really the case and this young cock will pay the value of the car in roughly 3 years just because he is young?

She wants to be involved, she didn't have to but she's a good mom. You wouldn't know this feeling because your mother probably fucked niggers while you were growing up

Lol, says the dude whos mom is buying him a car while he browses Veeky Forums with a folder full of black dicks.

sure thing kiddo

I don't know if it is for the whole of eastern Europe but we also have tax and annual vehicle test. So the running cost to run a car depends from hp, my father's 230 hp W140 costs additional ~200 Eur added to the Liability Coverage and my 95 hp shitbox costs less than 60 Euro per year (I haven't payed it in 4 years as the fine for not having vehicle test passed was 10 Eur and now is 25, so it is better to get fined twice a year than to pass the test and pay taxes)

Those people are fucking retarded.

kek, so this is what those stupid car mechanics thought he will be buying, salvage titles

Hey, if youre not financing, whats it matter?

This is what a 40k budget can get you.

Don't be a fucking idiot man. It's your first fucking car and you want an old school BMW.

That is the dumbest decision ever.

BMW are not reliable, and cost a shit load to maintain/repair. Plus you are going after old models that have expensive harder to find parts.

You are jumping into a MONEY PIT for your FIRST FUCKING CAR EVER.

So fucking stupid.

Just get a sub 5k sports car that's cheap to maintain if you want the thrill. There are many to choose from(mr2,miata,etc.)

OR

Save up more money and get a S2000 for ~7k.

Get a couple years of experience under your belt, get an education, do more research, acquire tools, AND then look to get into a OLD SCHOOL MONEY PIT BMW.

Or you know, get a Camry and be worry free for 5 years.

lol you know nothing about E30s

I know a shit ton about E30's. I had one.

Doesn't matter that it's "reliable", it's still a 30 year old car. Will have more issues than a newer reliable car.

>nigger
>fag
>being this irrationally mad
definitely underage
if you absolutely have to look like a boyracer just buy a fucking 3k civic or miata and put the spare money aside for maintenance, it will be more fun to drive and won't have the constant need for money and attention of a spoilt 5 year old

I hope you're really dedicated to the whole "learning to wrench" idea, because that's you're going to be doing a lot if you buy an old BMW. I've already had to put around 1000€ in mine in a few months, there are a bunch of tiny little issues that I still need to fix, and new ones keep popping up.

Just because they're over-exaggerating the prices doesn't mean it still isn't a bad idea. If you want to learn how to wrench start with something easy that won't need as much maintenance. If you just jump into this shit you aren't gonna have a good time. 3k civic is not just an overstated meme here, its literally the perfect place to start wrenching.

They're right, any bmw for $5k or less is going to be a basket case

The cars are 20+ years old and they're sporty cars, so at least one of its many owners would have driven it hard.

You're in denial OP, if you can't wake up and face the facts then I hope you do go through with purchasing one of these sub $5k shitboxes and experience firsthand all the headaches that come with an old ass sporty vehicle.

My first car was/is an e36 318i for 2k, just keep on top of things and it will be fine, I've had to put in maybe $700 over the past 9 months including regular and preventative maintenance, but it has never left me stranded. Just keep on top of things and you'll be fine

>They're right, any bmw for $5k or less is going to be a basket case

this and

>Don't be a fucking idiot man. It's your first fucking car and you want an old school BMW.
>That is the dumbest decision ever.

as someone who bought a cheap e46 for my second car in 2016, i regret it but then i also don't. it's heaps of fun to drive when it has no problems and everything is working fine but that is really quite a rare thing to experience. i keep telling myself that after x amount is sunk into it, it will finally be good until a big mileage increase but lmao.

currently there is a weird problem with the front suspension. i can't find out what it is myself and i took it to two garages and they said it's fine. i had just about everything on the front suspension replaced: shocks, top mounts, control arms and a brand new steering rack :( it tramlines and floats around the road at high speed and knocks through the steering wheel.

i bought it for just over 2k and i've probably spent close to 3k on it....

I smell single mom and son who pees sitting down.

Don't listen to women. Some are of sound mind, but they're few and far between.

Back to plebbit

I've had a cheap E46 for around 2 months now, I have a feeling I'll end up like this too. I've already had to replace the fuel pump and the entire parking brake assembly, and there's more stuff that needs fixing still.

I see people recommending cars
but is there not equal in style what OP is going for but more modern?

sounds like my brother's e46. he replaced his fuel pumps and then his springs broke. lol

This guy gets it. Sure, the motors in old bmw's are bulletproof. What about the electronics? The power steering? The water pump? The suspension? The drivetrain? Etc. And every time some stupid bullshit brakes it requires tools, experience, and parts to fix. And of yoh were wondering, no the parts are neither cheap nor easy to source, not anymore at least.

Old BMW require quite a lot of maintenance with tons of little things so if its your 1st car its really not a good idea since you wont be able bandaid the problems before permanent fixes

>I have an entire folder of black cocks
Underage cock loving faggot kek

Also nigger porn is for small minded normies

The fuck does your mum have to do with you buying a car.

If she's buying it for you don't be fucken picky, If you're buying it then what do you care about what she says?
