Try L1 while using R1, you get a higher damage multiplier I think with saw weapons. I only used Saw Spear so I don't know if it's the same for Saw Cleaver

I beat Maria last night. I couldn't get her parry timings down so I just fought her without. Really fun and fast-paced boss. Ludwig and Maria really have been the best bosses in the game so far (having beaten every boss up to and including Mergo's Wet Nurse) though Papa G is also up there.
