That describes pretty much all good sci-fi though, especially hard sci-fi. Sci-fi as a genre is best when used as a lens to explore things like politics and characters. Hard sci-fi has a habit of taking that a step further with all the things used to make space exciting left out.

I agree on what makes sci-fi good, but I think ym understanding of what hard sci-fi means is different. Regardless loved the show and how sincerely human the characters were. That bit of humanity in slice of life was something I really wanted more of after Barakamon and K-On

If your greentext is your understanding then its no different to mine. By removing the space opera fleet battles and elements that enable more 'pulp' stories you have a setting perfect for character focus like in Planetes.
