Oh, I thought you meant away from the main station. Honestly it's damn near impossible because there's no way to make gas miners period, and without R&D consoles you can't make any machines (including botany plots, vendomats, etc).

If you're okay with giving the crew a few round-start amenities though, a full R&D setup, some seeds and some gas miners (or botany equivalent) would work.

mutagen will give you all kinds of shitty genes, so if you spray someone with it a lot of times you can very easily find all the bad genes already. very rarely it will actually give you a good gene so it is a pretty good strategy to use.
