That's so inconsequential as Soejima changes P4 favorites every season and Yukiko shiling was near nonexistent in everything after P4 vanilla, because Yukiko is not popular. Even her voice actor mentioned this in the P4 vanilla drama cds, it was pretty amusing.

It's true that they didn't use the PT to boost their popularity initially, but they did need the PT to rise in popularity in order to be able to use them as a scapegoat for the mental shutdowns via Okumura, and once the public starts to turn against them, Shidou does use them as a talking point to gain further favor with the voters. There's a couple scenes where he specifically talks about them, and Goro's phone call with Shidou following the interrogation stuff also has them specifically note that both of them need to prepare a comment for the PT leader's "suicide," on top of Shidou specifying in their later discussion that they cooperated in multiple fields, including securing the popular opinion (in his favor).

Some of what Goro says on TV sounds suspiciously like it's scripted to be in line with the type of things Shidou mentions during his speeches, rather than him voicing his own views, too.

No, Yosuke did not have a similar role.

Yosuke helped figure things out. He took input from the other members, discussed things with them, and came to conclusions with them. He was the driving force behind investigations, but Yu made most of the major deductions.

Makoto delivers plot exposition. She does not use reasoning or deduction, she simply "knows" things because she's "smart". She does not discuss things with the other party members, the other thieves mainly just look clueless and wait for her to explain everything. Her job is to make all the plans and then tell Joker what to do.

The first is a very natural dynamic with realistic and interesting characters that feels fun for the player and makes them feel like they're part of a team figuring things out.

The second is awkward writing with flat and dull characters acting as generic plot devices that does feel fun or interesting and makes the player feel like they are being railroaded down a specific path.

True, however I can't help but feel Goro was actually trying to scare the PTs off before things snowballed, so it might make more sense that he was hoping they wouldn't go for the bait and once they did he proceeded to plan 'Act like I'm only on Shido's side'. Certainly he was never just gunning for revenge given how he even at one point suggests he and the PTs could make a great team, but Goro is ultimately still a selfish and self-serving kid, if the PTs can't see through his dad's plans he simply can't keep his cards with them.

Maybe if Akechi wasn't such a fuckboy...

Some of what he said during, at least, the very first TV show (the one during the school trip) probably was intended to scare them off, yeah. Whether it was to keep them away for their own sake or because they posed a potential threat to his revenge plan at that point is still up in the air, though - it's not until after the PT go after Kaneshiro that Shidou comes up with the plan to use the PT as scapegoats.

That said, some of what he mentions even that early on was definitely scripted. His initial comments about the PT's actions in that scene (from saying the PT should be judged by the law to how forcibly distorting a person's heart is something people should absolutely not do) is very similar to the kind of things Shidou says about them, whereas the later parts (after talking to Joker, about how there's an even greater problem than whether their actions are good or evil) is a bit more questionable (as that doesn't entirely add up with the talking points Shidou tends to bring up).

I hope Atlus expands a bit more on which of the things Goro brings up on TV are scripted and which aren't someday. Some of it can be guessed due to overlap, but others still feel too unclear, even with the Maniax book's brief comments taken into account.

Seriously, imagine the Groojo's reactions if they outright says "No, Akechi genuinely hated the Phantom Thieves, and was perfectly willing to put aside his budding friendship with Joker for the sake of his revenge."

Shogi is too long and complicated of a game to be sexual. MAYBE if they made it "for each piece, lose some clothes", but that's a bit much.

Both the actual game and the Maniax book already contradict that, so that won't happen.

People don't like him because of the ambiguity to him. He's liked for his personality and role in the story (and the dance at the end of his AOA). Clarifying what the deal with his actions at certain points at the story, if anything, would likely add to his popularity, since the current ambiguity regarding certain things if anything annoys people and muddles things up unnecessarily.
