Hello lads,
The wife and I are going to start trying to have a baby soon and I'm going to be looking for a new car because I drive an FG2 Si and I want four doors just for ease of putting a car seat in back. I tried with an old one of my parents recently and it's possible, but a pain in the ass without a squirming child in the mix.
We're looking to spend about $10k.
What we're looking for:
>Not a crossover or SUV
>at least four doors, 5 is a plus
>manual
>isn't boring to drive
>safe
Pic obviously unrelated
Hello lads
...
Just keep the Civic. Build some character.
Mazda 6. If you can find it in hatchback/wagon form you get your 5 doors, if not you still have 4. It's quite fun and sporty for being a full sized family car, and can be had in manual. Mazdas tend to have good handling, and good handling often naturally comes with a rigid, safe chassis. If you want something a bit smaller, the Mazda 3 would suit you well, since it'd be a bit smaller and more entertaining to drive without sacrificing any safety or much practicality. If you're really after a fun family car, get the Mazdaspeed version of either for a properly quick grocery getter.
Get this Volvo, Volvos are nice
The only concern I have with a Speed is reliability, but I'll definitely keep my eyes open for a good 6 wagon. I didn't even know they made those.
M8, I'd really prefer not to. We tend to keep our cars a long time, and that backseat is uncomfrotable as fuck for anybody taller than 5'2", and odds are our kids will be tall as fuck. My wife is the short one in her family at 5'9" and I'm 6'2".
you can try the Mazdaspeed 6, can easily find one for as low as 5k, which is pretty decent for a 10 year old 270hp AWD four door sedan with sizeable cargo area
Don't have a baby if all you can budget is 10k for your family car. Wait until you can buy a brand new minivan or something. Minivans are nice af.
Tha ks for the financial advice, but trust me, we have plenty saved. We're just not looking to take the depreciation hit, and $10k can get a plenty nice car that will last a long time. We could go as high as $20k and still pay cash, but we're saving that for other baby related expenses.
I'm 5'6 and my husband is 6'2. Can bang just fine in the back of my EK.
Our family car is a WRX wagon, it's quick and can get kids in the back seat just fine, as well as a dog in the back.
What gen is the wagon? Has it been reliable for you?
your kids aren't going to be 5'2" for a long time
Second Gen. Blobeye.
True, but we're planning to keep it for a long time.
why are you trying to roll sporty car and baby carrier into one vehicle?
keep your civic as a fun car and get a vanilla minivan for child lugging duties.
Simple. FA5
Meets all your criteria and looks better than the FG2 in my opinion.
Because the Civic isn't worth having as a dedicated fun car imo and we already have an FC for that role. I just don't want anything that will bore me to tears as a DD.
It's not a bad idea, but I'm just making sure I'm not overlooking a good option.
get something comfortable.
Fucking Honda Accord, get some sport package and a tech upgrade and call it a day.
The fucking things are everywhere, dealerships can get you any color, and year, and mileage no problem.
GTI
Just get a minivan. They carry all your stuff and the doors slide so you don't ding your car.
My wife actually already has one. Good pick though.
>I can't handle people wanting different things than me
>>manual
>>isn't boring to drive
she wont want that because manual is hard to learn, plus you cant text and drive with a manual
My suggestion would be Infiniti G35/37.
She already drives stick for her DD.
I completely spaced on those. Thanks, user.
Manual isn't hard to learn if you're willing. My husband taught me to drive a manual, and I had no prior experience with autos.
It might be a hassle getting it in, but you only have to get it in once.
Reliability with the speed would just be a matter of not treating it like a racecar and keeping up on routine maintenance, but since you already have an FC to fill the fun car slot a normal 6 or 3 would suit your family lugging needs quite well.
Another car that makes a good familymobile is the Lexus LS430. While they are a bit older and only have 4 doors, they have an extremely roomy, high quality, and luxurious interior. It's a million miles above any newer econobox, and even on par with modern luxury cars aside from fancy electronical doodads. Even the rear seats have comfortable space for someone well over 6 foot. Despite being older, they aren't bad on safety at all. Lots of airbags, good chassis design, and solid brakes make it just as safe as a more modern car.
They're a two ton land yacht and handle as such, but despite being boaty it isn't impossible to perform emergency maneuvers with confidence. They've got a great big V8 to compensate for their weight and go like stink in a straight line for some amount of fun factor. I've smoked a C5 Vette across an intersection before in one. Plus, merging with traffic is never the slightest of issues, even loaded with 4 adults and cargo. The crapton of torque comes on early and makes casual driving easy to do without ever getting over 2k rpm. You do pay for that power with mediocre fuel economy though, so there's a definite trade-off. It has Lexus/Toyota reliability as well, so maintenance beyond fluid changes and wear items is rather unlikely.
It'd be more of an option for rolling around in comfort even when your kid(s) are fully grown. I think it's one of the most comfortable and luxurious cars ever made that's within the budget of the average Joe. A Mazda 3 or 6 could get slightly cramped if everyone is close to or over 6 foot, and is more of a simple family car. I think either one would be a great option still, it's just a matter of your personal preference.
You make a good case for the LS, especially when I start thinking about how tall my inlaws are. I spent all of Christmas with them feeling short, which is pretty darn rare for me.
It's a great car for tall people. I'm about 5'10" and have a quarter mile of headroom, one of my friends who is around 6'2" or 6'3" can sit in the back without even having his hair touch the roof, and never complains about legroom. If gas milage isn't an issue for you, then I don't think there's a much better option. Do take my perception of interior space with a slight grain of salt though, I daily an RX-8 so anything with more room than a sardine can feels quite spacious to me.
I'd highly recommend test driving one, even the 01 that my family has feels like a brand new car. It has a massive amount of trunk space too, so even though you don't have a wagon body style, you can still haul lots of cargo.
If you're big into road trips, it'll cruise along at 80-85 and feel like you're maybe doing 50. There's practically zero road or wind noise. This can be a blessing and a curse, as with lead foot syndrome and all that power it's rather easy to end up going at speeds of many illegal-ness. It's easy enough to get used to though, and I just consider it a testament to how smooth the car is.
The suspension feels like you are literally driving a hovercar, it floats smoothly over even the worst of bumps, and most stuff can't even be felt in the cabin. The huge cushy leather seats help with that too.
I quite like the looks myself as well, it has nice subtle lines that give an air of quiet superiority and prestige. It's a big car and looks appropriately big despite not being flashy in any way. From the inside, it's like you're the captain of a luxury cruise liner, totally isolated from the road and noise outside.
I think that it is really some of Lexus's best work, and definitely a car worth looking further into.
RX8 brapmobile? It has those clamshell doors, manuel, fun (rwd), dorito is always exciting albeit sometimes for the wrong reasons
I've had a 2006 volvo xc90 for close to 10 years now and its been an incredible car. Never had any major issues with it, it still looks incredible, it has a turbo and a fairly stiff suspension so its not a slow car by any measure and it has one of the highest safety ratings of any car. And they msrp'ed for the same price as the ml350, rx350, x5 and q5 so they're luxurious and look great inside
Plus you can find them for like 10k now it's a great deal
