Basically, you put higher level CEs that you don't want into lower level ones, and the level of the CE that gets used determines the amount of EXP it gives. It saves QP and gives a little bit more EXP than the normal method. One thing I'm not certain about is if you were supposed to only put one CE into a 1* CE or if it was put multiple ones in it, but it's probably the former option.
