2F2F is literally the worst one and doesn't actually have a plot that centers on illegal street racing scene. It actually has much more in common with movies 4-7. Tokyo Drift isn't great either, but at least gives me similar feels to the original.

And after that the story nose dives. I think they just lifted the original idea from Keiichi Tsuchiya's beginnings and didn't have much to build off at the end of stage 1

The story nosedives because it goes from being shonen with an interesting rival of the week to shonen with a boring rival of the week, and everything Takumi does becomes a clear hackjob.
