Sv_pure is what valve uses to separate servers from using mods and other plug-ins.
Sv_pure 1 is what Valve uses I believe, and they don't allow any mods, while Sv_pure 2 does allow mods.

Damage numbers are in the advanced options menu(I think, haven't adjusted them for a while) Just scroll through until you can see it. You can also activate hit/kill sounds if you want more confirmations on if you're actually damaging or killing an enemy. (besides the kill feed of course.)

sv_pure is a method used to attempt to guarantee people are using the same files to play. sv_pure 2 is the most restrictive, blocking most customization, sv_pure 1 allows you to have a whitelist where you can specify files or directories that you will allow to be modded.

To me, heavy is much harder to play than soldier.
I don't have a very good reaction time and I'm not too accurate, so tracking far-away or extremely-close opponents is difficult.
However, with soldier the rocket launcher is mostly predicting where your enemy will be. That's not necessarily easy, but I picked it up quicker than I picked up effectively using hitscan weapons.
