Someone told me once the first step is to pick a symbol that'll always mean "dream" no matter what. Red ball, blue chair, something. That way when you're dreaming, and you're not sure if its a dream or not, you can try to recall that image and if you see it appear then it confirms you are dreaming. Once you know you're dreaming, you can tell yourself anything you want is going to happen, your brain will manifest it to be true, and thus control your dreams.
