There's a fair number of explanations you can run, but 90% of them would run into headcanons because we just have no information about the inbetween time.

You can always just consider both Toriel and Asgore's decisions bad, Chara and Asriel's plan and subsequent actions bad, and the writing of TP slanted too much towards Toriel. All of this is perfectly possible without going REEE at people who like the characters in general.

Speaking of headcanon, I place blame on the kids because determination basically renders all other character motivations irrelevant. Things only happen because the kids let it happen. That includes leaving the ruins and fighting Asgore. They could just have easily stopped trying to murder the goatdad and avoided him, but they didn't. It's their own fault that they died.

To Asgore's credit, he managed to dunk time-travelling children so hard they eventually refused to keep on living. Not even Flowey could rattle him. What a badass.
