Eh... if you care so much about retcons you should pick a series that only has one installation. Ultimately they're inevitable, no single series with several entries stays consistent. The relevant canon we have is that the SDR2 bunch slept nicely in a coma for a few days and woke up feeling refreshed and renewed, without a hair on their heads being touched. No amount of arguing is going to change that.

SDR2 wasn't even supposed to exist. Kodaka wanted Danganronpa to end at the first game. For DR2 to exist without screwing with DR1's ending, it needed to become a side story, it only focused on a fraction of what happened during The Tragedy. Even without DR3 you can still skip SDR2 because learning about the remnants of despair and more about what Junko did to fuck up Hope's Peak isn't a big deal. But that doesn't mean SDR2 isn't a fun experience and you should skip it. The problem is people put way too much value into plot when there's so much better things you should focus on like characters, pacing, atmosphere and oh I dunno, enjoyment.

The coma was never a retcons. Even DR2 said they had a chance of waking up eventually through a miracle. It's like people didn't play the game

We also never knew how they got broken into despair. That isn't a retcon if it was never stated how they fell in the first place. We just got a shitty explanation on how this was done in DR3.

Chiaki also isn't really a retcon as it was never said a real Chiaki didn't exist at some point.

The only thing that may qualify as a "retcon" is the twilight syndrome case.

Don't get me wrong! I don't think SDR2 is unenjoyable at all, in fact I did find it very compelling and fun. As a standalone entry it's certainly good, I'm just putting it into a larger perspective.

I don't actually like DR3 very much(although I don't think it's as bad as people make out), and I actually do agree that Kiri's revival was quite far-fetched. I won't comment on whether I think she -should- have died, but given that we had SDR2's whole cast revived as well I don't feel bad about being happy she didn't die.
