jap cars suck, the only time they had a hold in the industry was in the 90s with the entry level sports cars, they're not relevant anymore

the only reason anyone views the japanese equal to the west is because of the kawasaki ninja, which were built out from the UJMs. the 90s entry market was playing off that marketing strategy

ps. it's also why genji from overwatch looks like a kawasaki ZX6R, white and green, it's what flashes in people's heads when they think about japan

Unless designers got literally minimum wage and were forced to come up with a design in 10 minutes, it's pretty hard to fuck up design from budget issues. You either have a good design you don't.

Money isn't a large factor in design as money is a factor to good machining and engineering. Just have a guy with shitty ideas (e.g. pic) and the cars are ugly.

Pretty sure the current state of Toyota design is exactly the result of them putting more, not less, effort into designing the appearance of cars. They had an official statement a year or two ago that basically came down to "pls stop bully, we'll give our designers priority over engineers to make some real aBstRact fucking cars so you stop calling us boring."
