>Something reliable
>posts a land rover

I’ll admit I need educating in this area, are they really that bad ?

Okay, I’m 22, from England, moved to Idaho, I’m here alone and I’d like some friendly advice please, I like shooting and going off road with my buddies

They're the worst. The next worst vehicle probably won't be half as bad as a land rover of any era, especially the USDM ones you'd be able to afford. Defenders are interesting rigs, but a USDM defender is going to run you over $50k, and really it's just less reliable jeep for people who are too yuppie to be seen driving a jeep or a toyota.

I’ve looked into 4 runners a bit, any real competition? Or how about a Jeep?

1993 Toyota Land Cruiser, you limey twat.

4runner or Forester

Good luck finding one under $6k that isn't a heap of shit

Difference is, it's going to cost peanuts to get a 6k "heap of shit" Land Cruiser back to shape in comparison to something legitimately shitty like a Defender.

Thanks for the tip, what would you recommend ?

Anyone know much about the 4.0 Cherokee XJ ?

Under $6k for a decent 4x4 is going to be tough out west where prices are severely inflated

I mean there's no comparison between an LR product and a toyota, but under $6k it's going to be eaten alive by rust, at least out where I am. idk how it is in Idaho

Pretty good once you sort out the electrical gremlins, powertrain is bulletproof.

And, I mean, just look at it.

It's one of the best looking SUVs of the 20th century.

Okay, I don’t necessarily want a Land Rover I literally just chose that pick because it’s the most recent relevant image I happened to save, I like my buddies 4 runner but it’s a new one and out of my price range, what are the old ones like ?

Forgot pic fuck me.

But how good is it off road? Not looking to go mudding but I’d like something pretty capable of not being raped by dirt and snow

>what are the old ones like ?

Pretty much baby Land Cruisers, they are fucking nice and rugged.

Keep it stored indoors for the winter though, very rust prone.

I mean, they are Jeeps, come on.

To answer your question, they are very capable.

Looks good, price and reliability ? What’s too much mileage ?

What’s the least I could get away with spending on either one without having to loose sleep over reliability

Basing off the prices in L.A, it's around 2.5k-5k for nice ones.

Too much mileage would be 150k+ miles, like anything else.

Old Cherokees are super utilitarian, there's not much to break and that's why they are sought after.

92-98
nissan pathfinder
4×4 and is a great daly
maininence proper or knock
you are welcome
tell me o am wrong

5 to 6,000 pretty much.

Okay, good to know any other recommendations or things to look out for (thanks for the help btw, really appreciate it)

the 98 pathfinder

No problem mate.

I also suggest looking at Nissan Xterras, particularly the 2005-2015 ones.

Do they have a dif lock ?

Yup, they both have.

boise.craigslist.org/search/cta?max_price=6000&auto_drivetrain=3

They have a dif lock ? Any red flags when looking for one ?

I've had XJs on and off for the past 4 years. Like the other guy said, electrical issues can be annoying if you want yours to be perfect. Mine were beaters so that stuff never bothered me. Engine and transmission were super reliable even though I beat on them and didn't take care of them at all. It's pretty decent offroad with a small lift and bigger tires, but the open diffs definitely suck. I thought about welding the rear on my last XJ but never did.

If it helps I’m in rexburg (next to Idaho falls)

Thanks for the advice, I’ll give them a closer look, how are they on gas mileage ?

Also think XJ is a good choice. You want to look for one with no rust and under 300k miles. Ideally, under 200k. Maintained 4.0's routinely go between 300-500k without a rebuild. Price depends on where you are. Several years ago I found mine in Maryland for $5k, but it is literally a 9/10 and had 90k miles. You're gonna find some areas where they're $2-3k, and others where fucking everybody wants one and they're selling for $5-7k.

bozeman.craigslist.org/search/cta?max_price=6000&auto_drivetrain=3

I get 15-17 mpg in mine. They're hogs.

Pretty shit, but that's expected with a lifted vehicle that has 31" tires and the aerodynamics of a brick. It got around 12-14mpg city and maybe 19-22mpg highway.

I’d just like to take a minute to thank everyone in this thread

Like seriously

You’ve all been a huge help, it’s people like you that make the world go round

I know that this is literally Veeky Forums but you guys are great, I’ve been shitposting here since about 2012, this place has its ups and downs but all of you have really helped me out

Trustworthy advice and open discourse and discussion goes a long way

I’m going to use this advice as soon as I can afford to, you’ve all really helped take the stress off, I mean this is a big decision for someone like me, at least where I’m at right now

Thank you

I'd say go for the Z71, that thing is mint.

here, have some statistics

What do you think of the samurai ?

wow what the fuck, why did I send a RHD USPS Blazer lmao

Thanks for the info, I don’t do a tonne of miles but I like to save money when I can

The Samurai is pretty fun, albeit gutless.

I'd wager it's the one with the best gas mileage of the bunch, it's also the cleanest one if the odo reading listed is legit.

I mean, I did learn to drive in England, if it’s going cheap it’s not a dealbreaker for me

It's a pretty cool novelty mod, but it looks shoddily rigged.

How inconvenient is a lack of power going to be off road ?

Not by much, these Samurais are still a very popular choice among enthusiasts.

It’s my favorite so far, but early 90’s , how worried do I have to be about something like this crapping out ?

Not at all, early Suzuki SUVs are notoriously reliable and bulletproof.

If hes worried about power, go for a sidekick/vitara/tracker. I've got a tracker, love it. 200k on the clock, 5 speed manual. Great trucks.

Go for the Samurai.

ford ranger

>shitty like a defender
You do realize every military in the world utilizes them in some way or another?
>Muh jeep though
I'd rather push my Rover than drive a heep

that hoovie guy from youtube bought one for around that price but it has luxury that OP probably doesn't need

op you can pick up a solid xj for that cheap if not a lot cheaper and from what I know aside from head gasket issues on the 2000 models everything earlier is fairly solid
