You get less SP from leveling with crystals, so only use them to level fodder units for promotion or to finish out someone who's almost level 40.

You miss out on the SP gained from killing enemies, that's it. Worthwhile on hard to level shitters you plan to use/premote, like 4* Rein, Olivia/Ninian, or healers.
30 - 40 should be Normal Chain Challenge up to Battel 9/10 for SP grinding for Skill Inheritance, especially during 2x SP weekends.

I'm using the second one just fine, even with Fury taking out huge chunks of its HP. Getting Iceberg charged after taking a dime thunder for 0 damage(6 recoil) and countering back to death is always nice.

Epharim was a huge help pre SI when I rolled him. He's been a little outclassed (bad IVs and I turned to cav memes) but still holds a special place in my heart. His fight with Chrom was great and his special voicelines are really good. The guy who voiced him also does Lukas and some of his lines are fantastic as well; really makes both Epharim and Lukas sound just a little bit unhinged.
