People are easier to control that way. Also the market for repairs and maintenance will shoot up because electric cars suffer catastrophic failures you must fix without choice.

total BS. ICE is much more complex and prone to breakdowns

Its a stats game on which the people below the overlords can win a pat on the back and a hope of a promotion maybe. The real benefit is indeed to have an easier oversight and insight over your people to be more in control.

It will be sold as an increase in health and safety because people will have a decreased chance of being in an accident and will be less stressed because they can 'relax' on their journey to wherever. Ofcourse this will mean people will now be expected to work anywhere anytime. For the manufacturers this is a boost to their economy as people will slowly but surely be forced to buy them by their governments (look at cities banning out cars like diesels or older than x amount of years its already starting here) and from there on they will be stuck with the product as there is no going back. Well shit tesla wants another rocket this week how about you quickly wire them some money. You wont? Well then your car wont start. Car wont start, you wont make it to work. Now youll lose your job and youre fucked. Better pay right? Not like people will take it to the streets because again theyll fear for losing their jobs. The digital age is here boys and it is only going to get worse. But here is the latest iCrap and invasive apps so you will be kept happy and feel important while being kept busy, stupid and easy to manipulate.

To be a devil's advocate, you can't do a lot of productive stuff when behind the wheel, besides talking.

We need autonomous cars because 98% of people can't drive for shit and keep killing each other, traffic is a waste of time, it's stupid to own such an expensive depreciating asset that you use for like 5 hours a week, and parking is a waste of space. In a perfect world, no one would need to own a car but fully autonomous cars will likely never be a reality based on current "self driving" cars that can't actually drive themselves.

"Herd Autism"

But cars are fun. Driving is exciting. Renting or paying a service fee is an even worse waste of money.

Not a huge fan of sharing the steering wheel if you know what I mean ((germs))

The fuck it is. If a sort of fully autonomous taxi service existed, the average commuter could go to work for pennies on the mile. The average cost of car ownership is around $600-700 a month, which doesn't even include maintenance, and residences/offices/stores etc all have to have parking lots to store cars that aren't in use. A fully autonomous electric car rental service could charge as much as 40cpm and the average driver would still save thousands of dollars a year and enjoy shorter overall commute times.
