I had my first backing accident just yesterday. Or, what I hate is that it wasn't even a backing accident because I was pulling out. The lot was really tight and I had to do a 3pt turn to pull out, and my overhang caught his hood as the tail swang. Fantastic way to start a day. Fortunately I've been told it won't go on my MVR so technically that's still spotless.

The Swift driver just grazed my fender. The second driver got the corner of his trailer into my cab pretty good, inches from my head as I lay in my bunk.

This automatic transmission is pretty rad my dudes. I already don't miss my standard. Max comfy, climbs hills faster and smoother, way quieter than the engine in my 2015, and the mechanic didn't turn off manual mode so I can upshift and downshift still when I want

Training students is going to be so much easier and less life-threatening...

The climbing ability is definitely attributed to the extra grades though. I bet am identical truck with a 13 speed could still pull on you.

If all trucks were mandated to get 10mpg than the price of diesel would go up to maintain the same profit margin the trucking industry currently has anyway.
So it everyone got good mpg than no one would. It would than be up to big oil to decide

Anyone care to share stories about their training period and how they got through it? One of the reasons why I am into this line of work is that I don't really like people, so having to spend a lot of time in close quarters with some trucker is obviously not my thing. It is what it is though, I would just appreciate some stories.

My CDL story isn't too exciting in all honesty.

I got my CDL through one of the big oilfield service companies. Most of the contracts for getting a paid class 1 license here in oil country are work for one year and its paid for, quit or get fired with cause and you owe the full amount with no prorating, so if you quit a week before the year was up you'd theoretically still owe the full amount.

The school I went through was chill, but the experience was pretty quick. One day doing the air brakes course, then I had maybe 20-25 hours of seat time before they booked the road test.

The instructor was an older guy that drove for one of the other big service companies for a while, so he had been in the shit. He was a pretty good teacher. He taught us how to double clutch properly at first, and then how to float once we got the basics down.

The truck/trailer was a 18 speed forest green Western Star highway hauler with all the aero cladding on it, and a 53' van. I couldn't say what model or engine it had now. It had a similar setup of two long rows of switches like my 4900 pictured here, and it seemed like the cockpit of a 747 when compared to any thing I had driven before.

The road test evaluator was a miserable, wizened old bat in her late 50s to early 60s who was probably ready to retire. I was so nervous that I went slow enough that she docked me points at times for going too slow. I was just at the limit for points that I barely passed, but I could tell she didnt want to pass me.

I ended up working for that conpany for eight years before the big layoffs in early 2015.

I just kept getting kicked out and passed on to new trainers.
