Did you even follow the argument? They don't have to, those 3 units you like and upgraded instead will be used for normal PvE content, while the 4* Askr trio will be bonus units in the arena.

weapons and skills that negate priority-changing attacks (Desperation, vantage).

A big issue with slow units with high defense (Hector, Lukas, Camus, Xander) is that powerful counterattacks aren't useful if the enemy hits all 4 of his/her brave weapon attacks first. A lot of glass cannons (Both Cordelia, Hana) are only so powerful because desperation prevents them from being one-shot on counterattacks.
