Hey Veeky Forums

I can't choose between the RX8 and the GT86. I like both cars equally although the RX8 was my dream car as a kid. The RX8 is also ~3k€ in my country and the cheapest 86 is 15k€

I don't care about reliability at all, I care about everything else, from interior modernity to handlng. I'm willing to overlook fuel consumption if one car has more pros than the other.

I should also mention that if I get the RX8 I'll spend the money I saved from not buying the 86 on mods for the RX8 (headers, exhaust, intake, final drive, lightweight pulleys, spoiler, absolutely no rice)

What should I buy?

theyre both shit

I don't care that much about straight line speed, I drove an 03 1.6 Avensis so the concept of performance is foreign to me

Our highways have horseshit roads so you can't gun it down there either

I'm just wondering, apart from the lackluster horsepower they both have compared to other cars today what is shit about them?

I'm not looking to start a fight, I'm just curious about your opinion

What can I say, I love conversations

You should care about reliability, not thinking about it can lead to unnecessary painful expenses down the line.

The RX-8 is extremely unreliable, with pre-2009 models commonly having engine failure between 80k-120k miles. This requires a complete rebuild or purchase of new engine. I would avoid it like the plague.

The GT86/toyobaru is a shit performance car for its price. The 2.0L FA20 H4 engine cannot take forced induction (turbo or supercharger) due to high compression, makes awful torque (barely better than economy cars), torque dip, and sounds lack ass. Then you have the inadequate brakes that overheat after a couple of hard laps around a track and the interior is trash. With zero sound deadening and terrible sound system, any music gets drowned out by the lawn mower engine and wind. Lastly, the car gets crushed not only in the straights but also on the track. Miatas, Fiat 124s, Hyundai Genesis coupes, GTIs, and 4 cylinder muscle cars like the mustang and camaro are faster around the track than a brz/gt86.

There are a lot better options out there for a car. Where in europoor land do you live? Europe had a huge amount of used fun performance cars. Just do some research

RX8 is just a money pit that will lead to frustration and headaches 70% of the time.

If you are forking out for forced induction im sure you can afford low compression pistons or a cam.
Those engines take enough boost to blow up a gearbox before the engine so dont say they arent good for f/i.
Plus if you are going to mod an fa20 at all youd get a new exhaust anyway, nullifying the torque dip.

Buy an rx8 and put a decent engine in it.

I live with a very mechanically inclined friend that knows his way around rotaries so a rebuild every 100k miles isnt that unreasonable

So which one would you recommend from those two? I don't want anything else, I'll regret it down the line even if the other car is better than both

Well, unfortunately, it’s like talking to a 12 year old, you’d be wasting your time.

But people put FI on the FA20 all the time, retard

put an 8 series v12 in

If thats the case go with the rx8

I'd give you an opinion if I'd have driven both, but I haven't. If you frequent Veeky Forums then you should know by now what's good and what's not good about an 86. It's going to make you wish you had money left over for mods. I still wonder if I should have gotten the 20 year old RX7 that was in the same price bracket except that I don't have to think much about fixing things or maintenance.

Get the RX8 and tell us what you love or hate about it :3

rx8 renesis engine is shit, emissions is awful hard to find a wankel engine specialist 80k mile rebuild, high maintenance topping up premix oil every time coz your burning oil in the rotor housing, carbon deposits coz of oil, check coolant every time coz engine runs hot, not a daily driver car engine explodes if seals break , consider a rb25 swap if your buying rx8 less headaches.

GTIs will only understeer into the next ditch.

Learn about commas bro, they’re fantastic

He's not wrong tho

Semicolons; they're even better!

i wouldn't compare the gt86 to a car as it's almost closer to getting a bike. it's amazing to drive but you get tired of getting groceries in it. not because of trunk space though as the trunk is quite roomy. the clutch and gearing are unusual and the car needs constant high revs to survive past 150k miles. my younger brother has a gt86 and i still don't trust him too much with driving but i keep getting surprised when he takes roundabouts at 40m/h and exits at the last moment without any body roll at all.

all in all, it's an amazing car but it's a budget sports car so you will discover some clutch slippage when you near 300hp and then you get to destroy the car with a performance clutch and later destroy your weak subaru gearbox.

i can't comment on the rx8 though i expect it's similar

>he takes roundabouts at 40m/h and exits at the last moment without any body roll at all.
That's really one of the most delightful things about it, and if that doesn't make a grocery trip worth it for you then it's probably not the right car for you.

The gearbox comes from Aisin and is used in a variety of makes and models. I'm not here to defend it, but it would be a mistake to call it a Subaru or to confuse it with the 5-speeds that earned Subaru a reputation for shredding up gear boxes.

my bad. well i guess you can pump a bit more through the box if it's not subie. kinda agree that it's not for me since it's too complete for my taste and i like to use old people cars for boring days. though i'd love to get a mmc starion and build it to match the gt86. even if it's going to be twice as rough as the toyota

>The 2.0L FA20 H4 engine cannot take forced induction (turbo or supercharger) due to high compression

This is false
