21XX is a future where reploids and humans share the same society, so who's to say that reploids can't choose what they want to do, based on their skill set? A reploid is created, perhaps "adopted" and raised like I detailed a couple of days ago, and then, much like a human, it can choose a profession to aim for, based on its skills and the world around him, or other reasons. X chose to be a Maverick Hunter because Mavericks were being dicks and he wanted to help.

My headcanon (heh) is that Alia and the other navigators were normal reploids, who decided to help the Maverick Hunters by becoming Navigators for them. They were then equipped with full navigator gear.

They're robots who can take on different jobs, there is a good chance their design is modular. X can switch between his different armors, and many reploids can transform as well. The fact that Alia fights sometimes in X8 doesn't mean she doesn't have boobs.
So, reploids are made human-like so they can live in harmony with humans (heh), and they possess a modular design that allows them to switch parts. Why would they NOT be equipped for human-reploid relationships, or for that matter, relationships at all?
