I'm looking for a legitimate, civil argument regarding the validity of the Lyn/Lucina popularity debate.

I personally think that JP polls are poor evidence of Lucina's popularity, as Lyn has a significant following outside of Japan due to Blazing Sword being many international players' first FE. Thus, it should be considered that, as far as everywhere that isn't Japan is concerned, Lyn has similar credentials to Marth, being the first Lord played as in the series.

Additionally, Lucina matches up heavily with the Japanese ideas of beauty, due to her personality, character archetypes, and visual design. Add in her importance to Awakening's plot and the exposure she's gotten, and it's no mystery that she's the emblem of the Japanese fandom, and would score high in JP polls. Conversely, Lyn matches up more to Western ideals of beauty in her personality, design, and character archetypes, which contributes to her status as one of the most recognized characters internationally.
