good ratios meaning the ratio of input shaft speed to output shaft speed. First gear is lower geared than second for example and first gear provides quicker acceleration because it multiplies the torque more than second but doesn't give as high a top speed as second. Lowered geared trans/diff can make your car accelerate faster but get worse fuel mileage and reduce top speed.

Just get a V6. Most post-2000 v6 sedans will do 0-60 in the 7-8 second range and that's plenty of merging speed and passing power for real world driving.
