To answer your question, no, it won't cripple you. Space isn't used for anything useful by default anyway. Some people use it for an item slot, I use it for directional move.

I'd say give some thought to getting used to use F1 or 1 to select your hero since on some heroes you will need control groups to control units.

How many times did you die in lane? Not feeding takes priority over getting last hits. Did you ask your team for rotations? If you told them you were getting fucked and they didn't show up to help, then maybe it is on them. Did you adjust your build to deal with the harass? i.e. Did you grab a PMS and put some extra points in blur? In absolute no-win situations, you may have to pull the lane yourself and maybe even grab a ward so you don't get ganked while pulling.
