To the British, famine meant that the population was returning to levels which the environment/sources of food can sustain. If anything, they considered this as a humane thing to do: artificially sustaining these populations and letting them keep growing would only lead to greater disaster later down the line.

It was also a convenient to think this way since it meant they didn't have to do shit or worry or feel guilty. It would all sort itself out.

Yes but a famine doesn't inherently mean the population has exceeded the amount that their environment can sustain (in an average year). Sometimes you get shit like droughts and crop failures, or poor organization. Sure you can say "yeah exactly so the environment can sustain less people that year" which is technically not wrong but kind of a bad argument for population control.

It'd be like getting a cold winter and your heater breaking, and then nobody sending you a blanket or a backup heater.

That shit applies not naturally in some cases, but because the food crops were changed into non-food but valuable commodities.
