Just pretend you're not dumb and use station orders.

Wiki says there are separate orders for every alert but in my game all the alerts share one order list.
And even when I assign them to defend burrow they just drink in the tavern.

I'm tired of making planned out autism forts, so this time, I'm going for something completely organic an undplanned. What I have is basically one giant open air quarry, surrounded by a network of automined veins. Whenever I need more rooms, I just sqeeze some into the automined veins.

I'm also digging the main quarry deeper and deeper, and I intend to have it go through at least one cavern.

I think you're misunderstanding what is meant by what the wiki says. You know how when you put your squads on duty initially (s t) it goes from "no orders" to "training/active"? You've just moved between two different alerts, one which puts all your dwarves in that squad off duty and one which has (by default) "Train 10". You can create as many different alerts as you like to cycle between, and each can have their own set of orders or even unique orders for every month, just like the default training/active alert.

I am using [m]ilitary screen to set orders, I've made several different alerts, including civilians hiding in burrow and another alert which assigns squad to a defensive burrow, complete with orders to defend burrow every month of the year. However the defend burrow order seems to apply to every single alert for some reason, yet they still just drink in the tavern.

How do you automine veins?

Are you sure that your dwarves have picks and mining labor enabled and can reach the mining designated areas and that those areas are active (brown) rather than just markers (blue)? Are you sure your farms are set for seeds of a sort that your dwarves can reach to be planted this season and that they haven't already been planted and that your dwarves have farming(fields) labor enabled? Are you sure that your workshops have jobs queued up in them and that your dwarves have the appropriate labors enabled for those jobs and can reach those workshops and the materials they'd be working with?

I have no idea. The problem seems to have resolved when the wave of migrants arrived. Perhaps some kind of timer reset? They work fine now.

And yes, I'm sure. I'm not stupid, I played this game for years. The problem abruptly started and ended.

in my experience, dfhack is more unstable now than it has been in a very long time. exactly how often it crashes seems to vary between different worlds. sometimes it crashes every few minutes, sometimes it doesn't crash at all. today, I've had one dfhack related crash. I've tried to bring it up in the general, but people here are very quick to dismiss it, possibly because they're used to defend it against "purists" or something.

the dfhack induced crashes are easy to recognise, because unlike the vanilla crashes, they won't show you the "df has stopped working" popup. instead, the whole game + dfhack will just shut down.

How do you do it?

I make a burrow at the front of my gate, make new alert, assign the burrow and the squad to the alert, and give them defend burrow order for every month of the year. The moment I change from the training/active alert to Defend burrow alert they just turn civilian and fuck off.

Did you set the number of dwarves on the list? I remember it's not intuitive.

Yes I marked them all.
Tried both 10 minimum and 1 minimum and neither works.

Don't assign the burrow to the alert.

When their turn on the GateAlert schedule comes up to defend GateBurrow they'll go do that.

What is the current aftermath of losing a site to siege? Goblins just stand around?

it used to be that way before world activation. now they just leave and go back to their business.

demons, on the other hand, will disperse into the wilderness and occasionally attack travellers.

Didn't help they are still civilian
