Get the 2L turbo, a lot more potential for modification than the 6 cylinder. They're a great car and it corners a lot better than my old VX commodore.
Just keep in the mind the fuel economy on a 4th gen liberty is terrible, I've got the 2L turbo and mixed driving I still average over 13L/100km, and I have to run it on 98.

VZ handle well with a few simple mods

anything with a turbo should be ran on 98 lol, they can run lower octane but you'll get knock if you boost it too hard for too long.

There's an awful lot to chassis dynamics that you don't grasp. Without polar moment of inertia, weight distribution is arbitrary (otherwise a Falcon ute would be a handling God). Without suspension geometry accounted for, spring rate is arbitrary (otherwise a Landcruiser with a heavy leaf pack would decimate Bathurst). Without tyre compound and tread characteristics taken into account, tyre width is arbitrary (otherwise the same Cruiser with sticky 12.5 Trepadors would pull mad G's).

I'd say the second gen (think they were early-mid naughties?) because they're dirt cheap, not much bigger than the first gen but being a lot nicer. But then, I'd sooner buy a Corolla than a Rav4. Why exactly do you want a Rav4?
