where do you think Initial D got the idea to even use the AE86? It was because of its popularity of being cheap, fun and great chassis to use in Japan. Initial D came out in 1998 and the ae86 aftermarket was already somewhat large before that.
If anything Americans are the only ones that caught wind of the ae86 thru Initial D.
