Off road is great fun, but he wasnt suited for it.
His bike was barely suited for it. He wasn't necessarily bad, he was just slow in some videos because, according to him, he was too far isolated and alone and was afraid of fucking up. OP pic just proves his taste didn't improve much, but it's better than what he had before.

Ive ridden some shit bikes off road. In my oppinion, the XT is a good bike.
I currently have an XR100 that i ride off road and still make it most places that less skilled people can.
But ive also been riding since 5 years old.
Honda shadows are fine bikes too. I had one a while bike. As long as you keep a battery tender on it, it will go forever.

I was getting a bit tired of off road riding, it wasn't that I didn't enjoy it, but most of my enjoyment came from the long rides to and from the trails. I was inches away from getting a yamaha bolt, but the engine was poking into my leg and I simply couldn't imagine sitting with my leg out that far for any real period of time.

I jumped from a 250 to a pig fat 1250. I had no issues. But the gsf1250 has a linear power band and is heavy

It's the same engine as the FZ09, so understand that it will be a bit torquey. Even conservative numbers would place it over 100whp and 60lbft torque. That's as much horsepower as an R6 with 50% more torque. So you need to understand what you're riding, those bikes like to accelerate.

I bought is because I wanted to do long rides you simpleton. I can sit at 75 mph at 3100rpm all day long and still easily pull up to 90 for passes without changing gear. If I wanted a sport bike I would have bought a sport bike. And yes it was cheap I am a poor student. The 07 engine is also bullet proof.

There is however a nicely priced Harley XL1000 from 1964. I understand it'll require more maintenance than a modern jap bike, but what else am I looking at?

I never really enjoyed the ride, even long scenic ones, until I got a sportbike AND stopped trying to go hard in canyons at the same time.
Being a typical hoon with a naked and a deathwish on scenic roads is not the way to go. What you actually want to do is ride the pinnacle of motorcycle technology sanely, but ride it extra insanely on clean, prepped track pavement where it can really shine without making you shit your pants.
