So I bought a 1987 Mazda 323 with 70k km on it. It's my first car and I never worked on cars. There are a few issues with it. When I turn on the headlights the radio stops working and only the right side speaker works when the headlights aren't on and there's some smoke coming out from the exhaust. I mean excessive smoke. The car has a 1.5L petrol engine with a carburetor. Does it need a tune? There's also condensation coming out of the exhaust. So is the car smoking so much because too much fuel gets to the engine and doesn't burn completely?

what colour is the smoke?

white kinda grayish

head gasket

water is leaking into the combustion chamber

fuel smoke is black

So it's not the carburetor?
How expensive of a fix. The car sat for like 3 months and passed inspection.

check under oil cap for yogurt

take it to a shop and ask them to give you an estimate on whats wrong with it and what it needs.
then, after they tell you whats wrong, go pick up your car and tell them you'll have to think about it.

a smoking engine often means burning oil, meaning your piston rings could be bad, allowing oil into the cylinders to get burned with the fuel.
but could be other things as well. like running too rich because carb out of tune or your ECM is fucking up the air/fuel mixture for some reason, maybe a bad upstream O2 sensor.

on its own, condensation in exhaust is said to be a sign of a "healthy" engine. i cant remember why. you'd have to look it up

if you have access to an OBD scanner, plug it in and see what codes it gives you, i'd be willing to bet you have at least one O2 sensor giving a bad read

Have to disassemble the engine and get the block planed afaik, depending on where you go it's easily a $1K job

It's a 1987 car. It barely has any electronics. So the carb could be out of tune and it's giving too much gas to the engine?

Nice Miata

Thanks

i can guarantee the carb is out of tune

but it's not causing the problems you're describing

post dashboard pic pls

idk for sure. sorry, i was sorta guessing from general past experience. it might not have O2 sensors if it doesn't have a catalytic converter.

i would get a repair manual for the make / model / year and look at the troubleshooting guide. or go to Mazda 323 forum and ask around

he said it has a carburetor
it doesn't have a computer or oxygen sensors

cont'd-

ok i just googled it. the 1987 did have catalytic converter and O2 sensors, so they could be a suspect in the mix. if upstream O2 sensor is bad, it could mess with things. not a tech or a mechanic, just my experience with other vehicles.

this guy seems to know about this stuff though

idk i don't own a 1987 Mazda 323, but google says it has O2 sensors and catalytic converter

My bike has a carburetor and O2 sensors

F2T or FE-T swap the motor

Don't have the know-how, tools or a garage

Cute car, hows the dirigibility ?

>hows the dirigibility ?
pretty safe as long as you're not using hydrogen gas for lift and avoid flammable paint / sealant on outer skins

>1987 Mazda 323
a cute. do want

Noice. How is it? I haven't seen a Mazda 323 on the road in years. You're more likely to see an Audi Quattro than a fifth gen Mazda 323 here. How is it in the US? Seen any old Mazdas?

post more pics pls

Oh. I also bought a Mazda today. 1992 Mazda 929 with 130k miles. I've realised that when I turn it on, there's a big squeak from timing belt but after it's ok, what's oging on?

It's not the timing belt, its the accessory belt and it's glazed. A new belt or belt dressing.

oh. is there anything i can do for free to reduce noise when i start the engine desu. it goes away after couple seconds but still. also, when i switch from D to R or P, there's a jerk unless i hard press the brakes. is it the transmission fluid that has to go?

Belt dressing. It's a spray that will reduce it. Really, when the belts are glazed, it's time to replace them. They'll just squeal until you do...

bump

its a fucking belt man, how much of a poorfag are you??

Have fun when the belt snaps

i had the same car but called the ford laser with an engine that had problems running right, replacing the carb didn't help and was never able to fix it. You can fit an engine from a miata and others if your keen for high performance.

bump for interest

Oh, no, just not a dead battery. Everything but that.

I see 323 from time to time in the Netherlands

>90s shitbox
>with auto

just fucking junk it bro. if you're gonna DD a 90s shitbox it should atleast be manuel

Theere's a time and a place for everything

Its a 626 the 323s bigger brother ots nice but its old all the bushings are worn so it feels like a boat

A friend of mine bought a Mazda 323 BJ for 950 euros. Hes 22 so he can live with the lack of power anything. Fun car tho, hilarious even if you factor in the fact that he paid 950 euros for it.

Where's the rust?

Heres the only rust spot

Attached: 20180315_150849.jpg (3264x2448, 2.13M)

that's very cheap

what's the catch?

No rust on the wheel arches? That's a weird spot for rust

>condensation is a sign of a healthy engine
This is because water is one of the byproducts of combustion, and the more complete the combustion the more water vapor will result. If the combustion is incomplete/too rich it will yield less water vapor and more soot, as the cylinder temps aren’t hot enough to produce the normal exhaust products.

That's pretty good. Why the messy wire, though?

bump

why are people stupid enough to buy low km, high age vehicles and think they are getting a deal?

Because some people like old cars

Love the shape of that car. What model year and engine is it?

dirigible means steerable

Its an 87 and it has the FE-T turbo motor i wanna swap a probe engine but idk how to do custom motor mounts

Cool, I guess it involves some welding and a lot of measuring.

What about improving the FE-T enigne? According to Wikipedia the power for the 135 hp FE-T is considered conservative due to the NA FE engine being 118 hp.
So a bigger turbo and an intercooler with a good tune might give it some decent power.

Would drive it all night long

Oh man, that brings me back. My dad used to have one of those in wagon form back in the 90's, I haven't seen that dash in nearly two decades.
