That’s obviously not true. AMG has always been about driving like a hooligan and drifting around corners while doing mile long burnouts. The difference is that these days AMG makes cars very capable on the track as evidenced by the E63 completely BTFOing other cars in the segment.

Only certain models like the SLR or SLS were actually designed with handling in mind. Everyone knows you don’t rely on a mercedes in the twisties, although they make a lot of power.
