>"Don't fret, car fanatics. Self-driving cars won't replace your rides. John Krafcik, auto industry veteran and chief executive officer of Google's self-driving car project, said Tuesday he envisions a bright future for car enthusiasts who hold steadfast to the idea of driving their own vehicles in the oncoming era of autonomous developments and ride-sharing options."

>'"I think we will still have as many – or maybe more – exciting, emotional, wonderful performance cars in the future," he said Tuesday in an appearance one day before the start of the New York Auto Show. "I don't see that going away."'

I know Veeky Forums (and most of Veeky Forums for that matter) tend to be pessimists and cynics, but what are your thoughts?

It will slowly fade away.
People that enjoy driving are a minority, so cars that cater to the enjoyment of driving are few.

Now factor in an entire generation of people that won't ever drive a car.
There won't be a new generation of petrolheads to fill in the gap as we grow old and die.

That's extremely depressing.

That's the realist, slightly optimist answer.
Pessimist says governments will ban non self-driving cars earlier.

Of course, in the instance of the latter, it just means driving becomes counter-culture and therefore very attractive to kids who might discover the joy the driving.

DONT COMPROMISE
FIRST IT WAS GUNS
NOW SOMETHING AS BASIC AS PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION IS AT RISK
DONT LET THE SNEAKY ONE TAKE YOU BY SURPRISE

I think there's still too many kinks in the technology for anyone on Veeky Forums to worry about it before they have grey hair.
And even if self-driving cars take over the daily commute, there will still be enthusiasts keeping motorsport alive. The technology won't go away, it'll just go specialist like film cameras or vinyl records.

knowing how to drive the car will go the way of riding the horse. Only richfags will be able to do it, let alone learn it. Maybe some fags that work on ranches will still need to know to drive pickups, but that's it

>THE SNEAKY ONE
you know this is a terrible attempt at hiding your anti-jew shit, (((them))) was more subtle than that

This. Fuck’s sake, I like being able to go wherever the fuck I want without having to wait for some autonomous soap bar to show up

>I like being able to be picked up and dropped off wherever I like instead of waiting for the bus to show up

the other side of the coin

I, for one, welcome our new bugman overlords!

I think everyone massively exaggerates how many people actually don't like/want driving. Just because Stacy doesn't know how to put oil in her car doesn't mean she doesn't like being "in charge" of her 8000lb SUV. The only place these autonomous cars will make sense and exist are in huge cities and the surrounding suburbs.

As long as 3D printing keeps becoming more affordable then you can build yourself a custom open wheel race car and have your self driving toy hauler drive you to and from the track.

Nope. She would prefer to be on her phone texting Chad instead of having to drive.

>so cars that cater to the enjoyment of driving are few.

Good. Car enthusiasts will have more room on the road. The 'autonomous' solution will gradually morph into a bus which use less resources per passenger. Since autonomous transportation is all about efficiency anyway, see you at the bus stop as I drive by.

This. Half of the Google car project was testing the car and half of it was testing how people reacted to the car. Even normies still don't completely trust self-driving cars.

>governments

Which governments are these of which you speak?

Ya know, dem durn gubamints over der.

cant wait to try and hack the cars and cause a massive pile up

Unfortunately automotive communities can turn into stupid echochambers like any niche group. I've never known a pessimist to be right when it comes to incredibly large scales, as their frame of reference is usually small.

We know very well that new safety technology comes out that the old stuff does not get legislated out of existence and is still perfectly legal to operate. Anyone saying automated cars will cause the regulation and forefeiture of normal cars is a complete fool, who ignores the fact that in the US right now you can legally register and operate a car made before pneumatic rubber tires existed, before PCV and fuel injection, before airbags or seatbelts, all this shit that is now federally mandated did not change the legality of owning cars that did not comply. There is no reason to expect this will not be done in the future, as there is physically no way to confiscate and dispose of every manually-driven car in the country. There are are almost as many cars in the US as there are firearms. Good fuckin' luck.

The Matrix has us.

Gonna have to agree with user here...

The number of people I see on the road who are totally absorbed by their phones is boggling, in stop and go traffic, 70mph in the rain, the list goes on

If autonomous cars are introduced as a safety feature, car culture is doomed. It won't be too long before stacys son flings his tesla into a telephone pole. She will be distraught about how if the autopilot was on this wouldn't have happened. Enough mothers cry about it and would force lawmakers to pass laws saying cars with autopilot have to be driven by auto pilot. Any car that isnt a shitbox econocar will have if depriving us of new cars

It's new world order propaganda being shilled to us so we won't oppose autonomous cars and instead just sit back and let it happen.

Oh here's some feel good words, to make you not worry. Oh, what? You want legislation protecting your rights? Why would you need that? You're not some crazy conspiracy theorist who thinks people in positions of power would lie to you, are you?

>we will still have as many

we don't have any now lol

>There are are almost as many cars in the US as there are firearms
PUT GUNS ON CARS

Young generations still like cars. Just look at polling data. They're just buying them later because of monetary issues and the fact they can rely on friends/parents. In the past, households only had 1-2 cars at most. That number has certainly gone up certainly gone up. Plus more people are beginning to live in the city and thus don't need a car. Cars themselves (as an industry) are healthier than ever.

new cars are shit as long as fly by wire trash exists

It's a bullshit pipedream man, ai is a meme. Evs however are definitely coming in hugely, that before anything will kill or limit petrolhead nation.

Seconded. Normies gonna norm.

Same orange skinned cuck ones that are banning guns (from the "right" no less). It's the only way they work btw, ban human drivers and absolve car companies of liability for crashes. Whicb there would be lots of, because ai is a meme.

Ok, I think self driving cars will never really "work", but at the same time
> Govt let's us have stuff now
> How could they ever let us stop having stuff
This is how guns get taken, Ahmed rapes your daughter and you get thrown in jail for it, your dog making a Nazi salute gets you swatted, etc, thinking that a bunch of yids giving you a privilege guarantees that privilege, hoo boy.

>Good. Horse enthusiasts will have more room on the road. The 'automobile' solution will gradually morph into a carriage which use less resources per passenger.

>false equivalence

>believing jewgle

unironically this
First take away the means to defend themselves and stand up.
Then remove their ability to freely travel so they can only go from work to, their $1500 a month 10x10 apartment and Mcdonalds™ or Walmart™

Kids are getting more and more helpless with each generation. I'm only 24 and I know I sound like some grouchy old man but seriously. I know way too many soyboys who were content to let mommy drive them around until they were 18+ and HAD to get a driver's liscence. Even then, most of them avoid buying cars because they are fatherless or "ITSNOTAPHASETHISISWHOIAM" faggots that refuse to learn man skills like shooting and fixing cars and building things because they'd rather be on social media like a bunch of Stacies.

These are the people who will ruin things, just as they have been for decades now. These are the people who want gun control, overbearing safety standards, and will want self-driving-only cars in the future. They have been raised by their helicopter parents and liberal teachers to be good little drones who mindlessly consume pop culture, go with the flow of fads and trends and take the easy way out, shifting the blame to others and trying to create the most padded, coddled, safe-space of a world instead of living as independant men who welcome the responsibility of their freedom and the concequences of their stupidity.

Sorry for the rant, but this is part of why I became a teacher. I want to raise a generation that is wiser and tougher than their millenial parents. Forgive the spelling errors, I'm a filthy phone poster.

No, she'd prefer to be on her phone texting Chad while driving.

In terms of cars, millenials were the best buying generation, they just bought a lot later due to the recession. Gen Z loves cars, with polls showing most (95%+) have plans to get their license/a car. Every generation goes through the "But what if kids stop buying cars?!" doom gloom and it always works out. Been that way since the 80s.

Back to my point of """car enthusiasts""" being giant pessimists. People have been trying to ban sports cars for years. There's an ad I saw with a Dodge Challenger that says something like "Americans don't need 400 horsepower. Ban them." Plus, just because a car is self driving doesn't mean it can't have manual controls. It's not either you don't drive or you do, you can choose.

Opinion disregarded. You are a parasite.
