ASG - American Shitbox General

Anyone here know anything about the Dodge Aries K or the Plymouth Reliant? Particularly the '89 year model.

Curious what opinions are had on them, don't know much but I would like to own an old school American shitbox and one of these with extremely low mileage is up for sale nearby.

Also, 80's American shitbox general.

A few years ago, my mom had a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme like in pic related but red instead. It was in pristine condition but she traded it for a fucking Buick Park Avenue.

If you have to have an original K-car, an '89 Aries/Reliant is the way to go. They had fuel-injected engines, improved transmissions and interiors, more standard equipment, etc.

Not that the old K-cars are bad, but they're just not as good as the later ones.

Ah the Chrysler K-car.
They're neat and have a dedicated fanbase. You can make some awesome sleepers from them. Pic related, same chassis.

am I allowed in if I have a 90s burger shitbox

>A platform
>somehow a K-car
???

Fucking kek'd, I love it m8

Literally everything Chrysler made from 1981 to 1995 was basically a K-car.

this was my first car. seriously miserable, fuck old american cars

The Chrysler 2.2 and the A413 transmission are rock solid. I'd drive a K-car.

>stupid enough to buy a Topaz/Tempo
>bitches about old American cars
Try a good one before bitching. Like the K-cars and their many many variants.

aaaaayyyyy a thread that was meant for me!

My girl here was driving super strong today. Super fun car; just still wish I could find someone else that has a running one that is a daily like mine. It's lonely being a unicorn sometimes.

ask me anything about driving a '87 Horizon shitbox I guess

you know that it's a fun day when you get to yank out the plunger on the dash that turns on the instrument lights

There's nothing really special about them, but that was the point. They were an affordable, basic platform that was meant to build a new foundation for Chrysler's floundering sales.
They're not particularly great or awful, they just sort of...are.
They did become something of a pop culture object, though. So don't be surprised if people start quoting Bare Naked Ladies lyrics at you in the parking lot.

Tempos were pretty fucking awful but I always liked Escorts, I had four. You could thrash the fuck out of them and them and they just took it.
Like a power bottom.

Though I suppose I should mention all my Escorts were manual. I don't know how good or bad the autos were.

You forget about glorious LH platform

Love it, but it's repairs are a drain on me. A new problem seems to crop up bi-weekly.

Right now the blen door is stuck and I have no heat. The repair costs are equally uncomfortable as the prospect of removing the whole dash.

Maybe that's a second gen problem. I lived out with a low mile, old lady first gen, and it never has given much trouble. Hello, it even took driving over a ladder at 70 in the rain with no damage.

damn this has to be one of the ugliest car designs i have ever seen. im not tryna be a dick bro. but, why do you like it? shouldnt a car's aesthetic be the first thing to like?

>second gen LHS
Why
Who the fuck bought that ugly ass catfish looking piece of shit
First gen was where it was at

not him, but I've had one. Goddamn was that car nice to drive. It was so fucking comfy, and the V6, So long as it's the 3.3L pushrod, 3.2L SOHC, or 3.5L SOHC, it's damned reliable. The 2.7L V6 is garbage to be avoided.
There was even a sports version, the Chrysler 300M, which is surprisingly fun to drive. The thing actually won Car of the Year in 1999.
Just don't expect a Camry or an Accord from it. These cars were intended as competition for the Ford Crown Victoria, and the FWD Chevy Impala.

Very nice, I like it.

Heres an 89 Aries K that I could pick up somewhat closely to where I live. Paint is a little bit lackluster and looks to be peeling slightly, but the thing only has like 63k miles on it.

Another view, wish the person took better pictures of it.

I like it has the original wheels.

>only 63k miles on it
If that's accurate you're going to want to ask a lot of questions about how it's been stored and how often it is driven.
A car that old that doesn't even have 100k on it could likely have been sitting for a long time and that leads to a whole host of problems like rubber rot, corrosion, condensed fluids, seized parts, etc.

Good point.

It needs brakes apparently, but that is all I know right now. If it's running well and has no major problems, do you think $1200 sounds fair? Does that price seem to hint that something major may be wrong with it?

$1k to $1500 is an average price range for a running shitbox in most markets (it's not like these things are classic collectibles) but cough up $100 and have it inspected by a mechanic. Just because it's running now doesn't mean there isn't something that's about to break on it.
It is 30 years old, after all.
